Vadodara, still widely known by its former name Baroda, was shaped for over a century by the Gaekwad dynasty, whose rulers used the region's wealth to fund art collections, public institutions, and Laxmi Vilas Palace itself, completed in 1890 at a cost that reportedly exceeded Buckingham Palace's construction budget several times over. That royal patronage left the city with an unusual density of museums, gardens, and educational institutions for its size, most notably Maharaja Sayajirao University, founded by the Gaekwads and still one of Gujarat's most prominent universities. Modern Vadodara has grown into a petrochemical and engineering hub, giving it an economy that runs alongside, rather than instead of, its royal-era heritage.
