Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) is the busiest of the three airports serving the Washington–Baltimore region, ahead of both Dulles and Reagan National. It handles around 27 million passengers a year and is Southwest Airlines' largest base anywhere in the country.

BWI has a reputation among regional travelers as the practical choice — cheaper fares, cheaper parking, and a terminal you can actually cross on foot. All of that is true.

But it has one rule you must understand before you arrive, and it catches people out constantly:

BWI has two separate secure zones that do not connect. Concourses A, B, and C share one. Concourses D and E share another. If you clear security on the wrong side, you cannot walk over — you have to exit and go through screening again. There are no trains or airside shuttles to save you.

Get the checkpoint right and BWI is one of the easiest airports in the country. Get it wrong and you lose 45 minutes.

BWI Airport Overview

Airport Location and Layout

BWI sits about 10 miles south of downtown Baltimore and roughly 32 miles northeast of Washington, D.C. The main approach is I-195, which runs directly into the airport from I-95 and the Baltimore–Washington Parkway.

Southwest Airlines is by far the largest carrier here — BWI is its biggest base. Other airlines include American, Delta, United, Alaska, Spirit, Frontier, JetBlue, Air Canada, Contour, British Airways, Icelandair, and Condor.

Understanding the BWI Airport Layout

BWI is one U-shaped terminal building with five concourses branching off it. There is no train and no people mover — every connection here is made on foot.

The building has two levels. Upper level is departures: ticketing, check-in, security checkpoints, restaurants, and the observation gallery. Lower level is arrivals: baggage claim, ground transportation, and the curbside pickup area.

The concourses split into two groups, and this is the part that matters most:

Secure Zone 1 — Concourses A, B, and C Southwest, American, and Contour. Three checkpoints serve this side (A, B, and C), and they all lead to the same secure area. Whichever one has the shortest line, use it — you can walk to any A, B, or C gate from any of them.

Secure Zone 2 — Concourses D and E Delta, United, Alaska, Spirit, Frontier, JetBlue, Air Canada, and the international carriers. One shared D/E checkpoint serves this side.

The two zones are not connected after security. Walking between adjacent concourses within a zone takes about five minutes. Crossing between zones means exiting, walking through the main terminal, and re-clearing security. Allow at least 45 minutes if you have to do it.

Choose your checkpoint by your concourse letter, not by which door you walked in.

How to Navigate BWI Efficiently

Here is the simple way to read the BWI gate map and move fast:

Find your concourse letter on your boarding pass (A, B, C, D, or E).

Flying A, B, or C? Use checkpoint A, B, or C — whichever has the shortest line.

Flying D or E? Use the D/E checkpoint. Nothing else will get you there.

Check in on the upper level, then head to your checkpoint.

Walk to your gate. Adjacent concourses within your zone are about five minutes apart.

Peak checkpoint times are 6 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. on weekdays.

Here is what sits in each concourse.

Concourse A Map and Facilities

Concourse A is Southwest only, with 11 gates numbered A1 to A11, at the southern end of the terminal.

It has the widest food and drink selection of any concourse at BWI, including places open 24 hours. For frequent Southwest flyers, this end of the airport works like a compact little hub — easy to get around, and easy to find something to eat.

Concourse A was substantially rebuilt as part of the A/B Connector project that opened in January 2026, which modernized the A1 to A5 gate area.

Concourse B Map and Facilities

Concourse B is also Southwest only, with 14 gates numbered B2 to B15. It has solid dining, though fewer shops than Concourse A next door.

Since January 2026, A and B are joined by a direct single-level walkway rather than a roundabout route — see the connector section below.

Concourse C Map and Facilities

Concourse C has 14 gates, C1 to C14, and is shared by Southwest, American Airlines, and Contour Airlines.

It sits in the same secure zone as A and B, so you can walk between all three. It has a decent selection of shops, bars, and restaurants.

Concourse D Map and Facilities

Concourse D is the biggest non-Southwest concourse, with 22 gates numbered D1 through D29 (with gaps). Delta, United, Alaska, Spirit, Frontier, JetBlue, Air Canada, and Boutique Air all use it, and a few of its gates handle international flights.

You reach Concourse D through the shared D/E checkpoint, which also gives you access to everything in Concourse E.

Two amenities worth knowing: The Club at BWI, the airport's main pay-in lounge, sits near gate D10, and Roam Fitness, a gym with showers and day passes, is just past the checkpoint. Both are on the D/E side only — if you are flying Southwest or American, you cannot reach them without clearing security in the wrong zone.

Concourse E Map and Facilities

Concourse E is BWI's international concourse. British Airways, Icelandair, and Condor fly from here, along with Southwest's and Spirit's international routes.

It has a small number of departure gates plus additional arrival-only gates, and it holds the U.S. Customs and Border Protection facilities where all international arrivals are processed.

Concourse E has duty-free shopping and a comfortable waiting area, though fewer food choices than Concourse A. It connects to Concourse D inside security.

Handy detail: the MTA Light Rail station is on the lower level right outside Concourse E — no shuttle needed.

The New A/B Connector

On January 9, 2026, BWI opened the Concourse A/B Connector and Baggage Handling System, a $520 million project and the largest capital investment in the airport's history. Planning started back in 2017 and construction ran from early 2022.

What it delivered:

A direct single-level walkway between Concourses A and B, replacing a more confusing route

142,000 square feet of new construction plus 78,000 square feet of renovated space

Five relocated gates and expanded holdroom space for Southwest

A glass-ceilinged atrium stretching over a hundred feet, with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the ramp and runways

A new marketplace with local vendors, a bar, and new food outlets

Upgraded restrooms

A new in-line baggage handling system for Southwest that processes nearly 3,500 bags an hour, up from about 2,100, using seven explosive detection machines

The atrium is a real change of character for BWI, which has always been a functional airport rather than a pretty one. If you are flying Southwest, this is the nicest space in the building.

Maryland Aviation Administration leadership has said more projects are planned over the next few years, so expect further work.

Knowing your concourse before you go matters more at BWI than at most airports, because a mistake means re-clearing security. Here is the quick guide. Assignments change, so check your boarding pass.

Southwest Airlines Concourse at BWI

Southwest, the largest carrier at BWI, uses Concourses A and B exclusively, plus some gates in Concourse C. International Southwest flights depart from Concourse E.

American Airlines Concourse at BWI

American flies from Concourse C.

Delta Air Lines Concourse at BWI

Delta flies from Concourse D.

United Airlines Concourse at BWI

Spirit, Frontier, JetBlue and Alaska Concourses at BWI

All four use Concourse D.

International Airlines at BWI

British Airways, Icelandair, and Condor use Concourse E, which holds the customs facilities. Air Canada uses Concourse D.

Airport Lounges at BWI

BWI is not a lounge airport — there is no Delta Sky Club, United Club, or Admirals Club here. The options are limited but useful.

Both are on the D/E side. If you are flying Southwest or American out of A, B, or C, you cannot reach either without clearing security in the wrong zone. Worth knowing before you buy a day pass.

BWI Airport Parking Map

BWI has some of the cheapest airport parking on the East Coast — roughly 24,700 spaces across five on-airport facilities.

Hourly Garage

The Hourly Garage is directly across from the terminal and is the only option with a direct walk — no shuttle. It costs $4 an hour, capped at $30 a day.

That cap makes it the priciest overnight choice, so use it for pickups, drop-offs, and visits under three hours. Not for a week away.

Daily Garage

Next to the Hourly Garage on Aviation Boulevard, the Daily Garage costs $16 a day and is covered. A short walk or a free shuttle gets you to the terminal.

This is the best pick for one to four nights when you want your car under a roof.

Express Parking

Express Parking sits on Scott Road near the Cell Phone Lot, close to where I-195 meets Aviation Boulevard. It costs $14 a day and uses the free shuttle.

It is uncovered, but the shuttle ride is similar to the Daily Garage. A good backup when other lots fill.

Long-Term Lots A and B

The Long-Term Lots are the cheapest on-airport option at $11 a day, and the largest by capacity. Free shuttles run every 10 to 15 minutes during normal hours and every 25 minutes between 1 and 5 a.m.

Practical tip: photograph your space number and your bus stop number before you walk away. The lots are big and the sections look alike.

BWI Rail Station Garage

This one gets overlooked, and it should not. The Rail Station Garage sits at the MARC and Amtrak station and costs $12 a day, with a free shuttle to the terminal running around the clock.

It is covered, it undercuts Express Parking, and it gives you a rail option if your plans change. If you commute from D.C. or Annapolis, it is a smart hybrid.

Cell Phone Lot

Free, across from Express Parking near I-195 and Aviation Boulevard. Wait there while a flight is delayed rather than circling or paying garage rates.

BWI Parking Rates at a Glance

Rates are set by the Maryland Aviation Administration and were verified in mid-2026. EV charging is available in the parking complex, though station locations shift as upgrades roll out. Book ahead around Thanksgiving, spring break, and summer holidays, when the cheap lots fill first.

Rental cars at BWI are in a consolidated facility a short shuttle ride from the terminal.

Rental Car Facility

Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Sixt, and Thrifty all operate from the shared BWI rental car facility.

Free shuttles pick up on the lower level, at doors 1, 11, and 16. Look for the marked rental car stop outside baggage claim.

Rental Car Return

Return your car at the same facility and take the shuttle back to the upper level for departures. Add about 30 minutes to your usual check-in time.

Ground Transportation

Everything loads from the lower level. Taxis and rideshares pick up at curb level outside the doors, and taxis run 24 hours a day. Parking shuttles use the lower level inner curb near doors 1, 9, and 15 — if you are heading back to the Long-Term Lots and want the best shot at a seat, board at door 1.

Getting To and From BWI Airport

BWI has better rail access than most American airports, with two separate systems.

MTA Light Rail. The station is on the lower level right outside Concourse E, with no shuttle needed. It runs into downtown Baltimore for around $2 one way. Cheap and simple, though slower than driving.

MARC Penn Line. MARC trains stop at BWI Rail Station, connected to the terminal by a free shuttle running every 10 to 20 minutes. The ride to Washington Union Station takes about 40 to 45 minutes for around $7 to $8 — a genuinely good deal for getting between BWI and D.C.

One important catch: MARC does not run on Sundays or most federal holidays, and service is reduced on Saturdays. Check the schedule before you count on it. Amtrak uses the same station every day, at higher fares.

Buses. MTA Route 75 runs to the Patapsco Light RailLink station and Arundel Mills Mall. Route 201 connects the airport to the Washington Metro at Shady Grove.

Driving. Downtown Baltimore is about 10 miles via I-195 and I-95, roughly 20 minutes. Washington, D.C. is about 32 miles and takes 45 to 75 minutes depending on traffic.

Taxi and rideshare. Both pick up at curb level on the lower level. A rideshare to downtown Baltimore or the suburbs typically runs $30 to $50 or more each way.

BWI's dining is practical rather than fancy, but it covers the basics well and there are some good Maryland options. Here is what the BWI food map looks like.

Dining in Concourse A

Concourse A has the widest food and drink selection at BWI, including outlets that stay open 24 hours. If you are flying Southwest and have time, this is the best end of the airport to wait in.

Dining in Concourse B

Concourse B has a good range of dining, though fewer shops than A. The new A/B Connector marketplace added local vendors, a bar, and more seating between the two.

Dining in Concourse C

Concourse C has a reasonable spread of shops, bars, and restaurants serving Southwest, American, and Contour passengers.

Dining in Concourses D and E

The D/E side has solid options and shares them across both concourses, since they sit in the same secure zone. Concourse E adds duty-free shopping for international departures.

Tip: within your secure zone you can walk to any concourse for food. Flying out of B but want something in A? Five minutes. Flying out of C but everything is in D? That one is not possible without re-clearing security. Plan on your own side of the airport.

BWI Airport Baggage Claim Map

Baggage claim at BWI is on the lower level, with carousels serving all concourses. Follow the signs down from your gate and check the screens for your carousel number.

Ground transportation, taxis, rideshares, and rental car shuttles all load from doors along this same lower level.

Domestic Arrivals

Head down to the lower level and find your carousel. Southwest bags now move through the new in-line system installed with the A/B Connector, which processes nearly 3,500 bags an hour — a meaningful jump from the old system. That should mean shorter waits, though staffing and weather still affect delivery times.

International Arrivals

International flights are processed through U.S. Customs and Border Protection in the Concourse E area. You clear passport control, collect your bags, pass customs, then continue down to the lower level to exit.

If you are connecting onward, re-check your bags and clear security again — and remember that if your next flight leaves from Concourse A, B, or C, you will be crossing into the other secure zone. Allow at least three hours.

For items left on the plane, contact your airline. For anything lost elsewhere in the airport, contact BWI's Lost and Found through bwiairport.com. Report it as early as you can.

Get the Checkpoint Right

This is the whole game at BWI. A, B, and C share one secure zone. D and E share another. They do not connect.

If you are flying Southwest, American, or Contour, use any of checkpoints A, B, or C and pick the shortest line. If you are flying Delta, United, Spirit, Frontier, JetBlue, Alaska, Air Canada, or an international carrier, go straight to the D/E checkpoint.

Crossing zones after security means exiting and re-screening. Budget 45 minutes if you must.

How Early to Arrive

Arrive 2 hours ahead for domestic flights and 3 hours for international. Peak checkpoint times are 6 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. on weekdays.

Take the Train

BWI's rail access is genuinely good. Light Rail runs from a station right outside Concourse E for about $2. MARC reaches Washington Union Station in around 40 minutes for about $7.

Just remember MARC does not run Sundays or most federal holidays. That single fact strands people every year.

Park Long-Term and Save

At $11 a day, BWI's Long-Term Lots are among the cheapest airport parking in the Northeast. A week costs $77 — less than two days in the Hourly Garage. Unless you are only there for a few hours, skip the Hourly Garage entirely.

Southwest Changes in 2026

If you fly Southwest out of BWI regularly, 2026 is a transition year. Southwest has introduced assigned seating, bookable for travel from late January 2026. If you are used to the old open-boarding system and its position-in-line strategy, that no longer applies.
