It is best known worldwide as the home of the FedEx Express global super-hub — MEM is one of the busiest cargo airports on the planet, moving millions of pounds of freight every night — but for passengers, it is a compact, easy, and genuinely pleasant airport to use.

Here is the single most important thing to know, and it makes MEM one of the simplest airports in the country to navigate.

Memphis used to be a Delta megahub with three sprawling concourses — A, B, and C. When Delta "de-hubbed" MEM, most connecting traffic disappeared, leaving a smaller origin-and-destination market. So the airport did something bold: it consolidated every passenger flight into a single, completely rebuilt Concourse B and closed Concourses A and C.

The modernized Concourse B opened in February 2022 with wider hallways, higher ceilings, floods of natural light, and a genuinely excellent food and music program that celebrates Memphis. Every airline, every gate, every flight now runs from this one concourse. You clear security once, and the walk to the furthest gate is under 10 minutes.

Memphis International Airport (MEM) Overview

Airport Location and Layout

MEM sits about 8 miles southeast of downtown Memphis, off I-240 and South Airways Boulevard. The drive downtown normally takes 15 to 20 minutes.

MEM serves a solid roster of passenger airlines despite its smaller size: Delta, American, United, Southwest, Spirit, Frontier, Allegiant, Breeze, Vacation Express, and others. Delta retains the largest passenger presence and the airport's Delta Sky Club.

Understanding the MEM Airport Layout

MEM is a single terminal, and after its transformation it is about as simple as a mid-sized airport gets.

Two main levels:

Upper level — Ticketing, check-in, and access to Concourse B through security. Airline ticket counters are spread across the old A, B, and C ticketing halls.

Ground level — Baggage claim and the Ground Transportation Center.

One active concourse: Concourse B. After a $114 million renovation, it is the sole airside concourse, handling all 23 gates for every airline.

Concourse B is Y-shaped:

The central stem and southeastern leg hold the renovated gates, B1 to B23 — this is where nearly all passenger flights operate

The southwestern leg (Gates B27 to B44) is used for non-precleared international arrivals and customs processing

Concourses A and C are closed. Concourse A is being demolished to make way for a new administration and baggage-inspection building. You will see A and C on old maps, but no passenger flights use them.

Because everything runs from one concourse, there is nothing to transfer between. You clear security once and walk. The furthest gate is under 10 minutes from the checkpoint. This is a genuine advantage — MEM is one of the least stressful airports in the country to connect through or fly from.

How to Navigate MEM Efficiently

The Main Terminal

The main terminal handles all check-in and security on the upper level, with baggage claim below. Ticketing is spread across the old A, B, and C halls, so the entrance door you use depends on your airline.

Concourse B — the Only Active Concourse

Concourse B is the heart of the modernized airport, reopened in February 2022. It is bright, open, and well-designed, with wide hallways and high ceilings.

The layout is a Y-shape:

Central stem and southeastern leg — Gates B1 to B23, the renovated gates where nearly all flights operate

Southwestern leg — Gates B27 to B44, used for non-precleared international arrivals and customs

Concourse B holds the Delta Sky Club (near the central rotunda, close to Gate B4), a superb selection of Memphis food, a meditation room, shops, and free Wi-Fi.

Because it is the only concourse, everything you need is here, and nothing is far.

Concourses A and C — Closed

Both A and C were closed as part of the airport's renewal. Concourse A demolition began in 2025 to make way for a new administration and baggage-inspection building. Concourse A's most recent addition — 16 gates built in 2000 for 50-seat regional jets — is among the areas being removed, since those small jets have largely been retired.

If you find a map or guide showing Concourse A or C gates, it is out of date. Everything is in Concourse B now.

Delta Air Lines at MEM

Delta, MEM's largest passenger carrier, operates from the central Concourse B gates, and the Delta Sky Club is nearby.

Southwest, American and United at MEM

All operate from Concourse B, clustered in the gate ranges above.

International Flights at MEM

Non-precleared international arrivals are processed in the southwestern leg of Concourse B (Gates B27 to B44), where the customs facilities are located. Passengers from preclearance airports arrive as domestic flights.

The whole point of MEM's redesign: there is no wrong concourse to end up in. Everything is in Concourse B, so navigation is simply a matter of walking to your gate.

Security and TSA Screening at MEM

MEM has a single security checkpoint past Terminal B ticketing on the upper level. Because all flights use Concourse B, this one checkpoint serves the entire airport.

TSA PreCheck is available at the main checkpoint and is well worth using at peak hours. Travelers consistently rate the PreCheck lane as a real time-saver here.

How long to allow. MEM's compact single-concourse design means security is usually quick, but the standard advice applies: 2 hours before a domestic flight, 3 before an international one. Early mornings are the busiest.

During construction, some routing and access points are changing under the Terminal Modernization and Seismic Program — follow current signage.

Airport Lounges at MEM

The Delta Sky Club is the main airport lounge, reflecting Memphis's long Delta history. There is no Admirals Club, United Club, Centurion Lounge, or Priority Pass lounge currently at MEM.

A special mention: MEM hosts a dedicated St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Patient Lounge — St. Jude is based in Memphis, and the airport provides a quiet, private space for patients and families traveling for treatment. It is a genuinely thoughtful touch unique to this airport.

Because there is only one concourse, the Sky Club is an easy walk from any gate if you are eligible.

MEM's parking is among the most affordable of any airport in this series, and the layout is simple. Rates are published by the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority.

All MEM lots give you the first 30 minutes free, then charge $4 per hour up to the daily maximum.

Short-Term Parking

Short-Term parking is on the ground level of the three-story facility directly across from the terminal — the closest option, ideal for pickups and drop-offs.

Rate: first 30 minutes free, then $4/hour, up to $24 a day.

Long-Term Parking

Long-Term parking offers over 2,200 spaces and is excellent value for multi-day trips.

Rate: first 30 minutes free, then $4/hour, up to $15 a day.

Economy Parking

Economy is the cheapest official option — over 4,500 spaces on levels 3 to 7 of the Ground Transportation Center (GTC), which connects to Concourse B by a covered walkway. So the cheapest lot is also covered and requires no shuttle.

Rate: $9 a day flat (no hourly rate).

At $9 a day, covered, and walkable to the terminal, the Economy garage is the standout value at MEM.

Blue and Yellow Overflow Lots

The Blue (west side) and Yellow (east side) lots are overflow only — they open when the main lots hit capacity. When active they cost $9 a day, credit card only, and parking staff direct you to the shuttle. Don't plan around them; use them only if directed.

Cell Phone Lot

Free. Wait there until your passenger is at the curb.

MEM Parking Rates at a Glance

EV charging is available, including 10 stations on Level 5 of the parking structure, two of which are accessible.

Rental Car Facility

MEM's rental companies operate from a facility reached through the Ground Transportation Center. Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Sixt, and Thrifty all serve the airport. Follow the ground transportation signs from baggage claim.

Rental Car Return

Return your car at the same facility and head back through the GTC to the terminal. Because everything is compact and close, you need less buffer than at most airports — around 30 minutes on top of your normal check-in time.

A Note on Getting Around Memphis

Memphis has limited public transit to the airport, so a rental car or rideshare is the practical choice for most visitors — especially if you are heading to Graceland (close by), downtown, Beale Street, or the wider Mid-South.

Ground Transportation

Ground transportation is on the lower level outside baggage claim. Taxis wait in the center lane in front of Concourse B baggage claim, available from 6 a.m. until an hour after the last flight arrives — all metered, no reservation needed. Rideshares and hotel shuttles load from their marked zones. Follow the green "Ground Transportation" signs.

Getting To and From Memphis Airport

Driving. Downtown Memphis is about 8 miles via I-240, typically 15 to 20 minutes. Graceland is very close — just a couple of miles.

Taxi. Metered taxis wait in the center lane in front of Concourse B baggage claim, from 6 a.m. until an hour after the last arrival.

Rideshare. Uber and Lyft pick up from marked zones on the lower level.

MATA Route 69 bus. The Memphis Area Transit Authority Route 69 connects the airport with downtown. It is the budget option, though service is not frequent — check the schedule if you are relying on it.

Hotel shuttles. Many airport-area hotels run courtesy shuttles from the lower level.

A note on rail: there is no rail link to MEM. A rental car, rideshare, taxi, or the MATA bus are your options.

This is where the modernized MEM shines. The airport made local food a centerpiece of its redesign, and Concourse B now has one of the best regional food line-ups of any mid-sized airport in the country — which, in Memphis, means barbecue.

The single-concourse advantage: because everything is in Concourse B, all the food is a short walk from any gate. There is no wrong concourse to get stuck in, and nothing is more than about 10 minutes away.

Grab-and-go options are also available in the main terminal before security, for anyone arriving early or meeting a passenger.

Shopping at Memphis Airport

Concourse B has a good selection of shops, including Memphis- and music-themed gifts, news and convenience stores, and travel essentials. The airport's strong art and music program means the retail and public spaces have real local character.

Passenger Services and Amenities

MEM's Memphis-music theme is genuine — live and recorded local music plays throughout, and the airport's public art program is one of its signatures.

Accessibility at Memphis Airport

MEM's single-concourse design is a real accessibility advantage — one checkpoint, one concourse, no trains, and short walking distances. The airport also runs a well-developed accessibility program.

Wheelchair assistance. Arrange this with your airline when you book, or ask at the ticket counter. Airlines provide service from check-in through security to the gate, and from arrival to baggage claim.

Accessible parking and EV charging. Accessible spaces are in all lots near elevators, and two of the Level 5 EV charging stations are accessible.

Short, step-free routes. Because everything is in Concourse B and the airport is compact, the walking effort is minimal, and the Economy garage connects to the concourse by a covered walkway with no shuttle.

The St. Jude Patient Lounge provides a private, calm space for patients and families traveling for treatment.

Baggage claim at MEM is on the lower (ground) level of the terminal. Follow the signs down and check the screens for your carousel.

Domestic Arrivals

Walk down from Concourse B to the ground level and collect your bags. Ground transportation — taxis, rideshares, hotel shuttles, and the rental car and parking connections — is right outside.

Because MEM has a single terminal and one concourse, anyone meeting you comes to one clear location.

International Arrivals

Non-precleared international flights are processed in the southwestern leg of Concourse B (Gates B27 to B44), where customs facilities are located. You clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection there, collect your bags, and continue out. Passengers from preclearance airports arrive as domestic flights.

If you are connecting onward, re-check your bags and clear security again. Allow at least three hours for an international-to-domestic connection, though MEM's compact layout makes this easier than at larger airports.

Lost and Found

For items left on the plane, contact your airline directly. For items left at a security checkpoint, file a claim with TSA. Anything else lost in the terminal goes to the airport's Lost and Found through flymemphis.com. Report it as soon as you notice.

MEM's biggest advantage is its simplicity. Every flight, every gate, every airline is in one modernized concourse. There is no wrong concourse, no train, and no long walk — the furthest gate is under 10 minutes from security. Just find your gate.

Use the Right Ticketing Door

The one thing to get right on arrival: the ticketing counters are spread across the old A, B, and C halls. Most airlines use Doors 2 to 4; Spirit and United use a separate east-side entrance. Check your airline before you are dropped off.

Park in the Economy Garage

At $9 a day, covered, and connected to Concourse B by a covered walkway with no shuttle, the Economy garage in the GTC is the best-value airport parking in this whole series. Unless you are only there an hour, it is the obvious choice.

Eat the Barbecue

This is not a throwaway tip. Central BBQ and Corky's inside Concourse B are genuinely good — better than most cities' actual restaurants, let alone their airports. If you have time before your flight, eat here.

How Early to Arrive

Arrive 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international one. MEM's single checkpoint and single concourse make it quick, but leave a margin at peak morning hours. TSA PreCheck is well worth using.

Watch for Construction

MEM is in the middle of a multi-year modernization. The Pedestrian Tunnel between Terminal B and the Pedestrian Plaza was closed into spring 2026, the outer commercial drive is being rebuilt, and Concourse A is being demolished. Follow current signage and allow extra time on the drive in.

What's Changing at MEM

MEM completed its landmark move — consolidating all flights into the modernized Concourse B — in February 2022. It is now working through further improvements under the Terminal Modernization and Seismic Program (TMSP):

Flying from Memphis (MEM) to India

There are no nonstop flights between Memphis and India, so every journey involves at least one connection — and usually two.

How Your Route Will Work

Two stops is the norm from Memphis. Since MEM is now an origin-and-destination airport without a hub, most itineraries connect first through a larger U.S. gateway — Atlanta, New York JFK, Newark, Chicago, or Washington Dulles — then onward through a European or Middle Eastern hub before reaching India. Expect 26 to 34 hours of total travel.

Because Delta has the largest presence at MEM, a common routing runs Memphis to Atlanta, then onward on Delta or a SkyTeam partner through a European hub.

If you fly this route often, it is worth comparing fares from Nashville (about three hours' drive) or connecting through Atlanta, both of which offer deeper international options.

Recommended Arrival Time at MEM

Arrive at least 3 hours before your first departure, even if that first leg is a short domestic hop, because you will be checking bags all the way through to India and international check-in takes longer.

MEM is efficient and rarely has extreme queues, so you are unlikely to need more than that — but make it 3.5 hours during the winter holidays or a peak weekend, and allow extra for the ongoing roadway construction on the drive in.

Most airlines close international check-in 60 minutes before departure. Missing that window costs you the entire itinerary.

Baggage Transfer

Book the whole journey on one ticket wherever possible. On a single ticket your bags are normally checked straight through from Memphis to your final Indian city — which matters on a two-stop route.

Two things to confirm at the MEM counter before you walk away:

Look at the bag tag yourself. It should show your final destination — BOM, DEL, MAA, BLR, HYD, and so on — not just your first connecting airport.

Ask whether you need to collect and re-check anywhere. On two-stop routes with an airline change, you often will.

If you booked separate tickets, assume you will collect and re-check at every connection point and clear security again. On a Memphis-to-India routing that can mean doing it twice. Leave at least four hours per connection.

Baggage allowance on India routes is often more generous than U.S. domestic rules. The allowance that applies is set by the airline operating your long-haul leg — check that carrier's rules, not the one flying you out of Memphis.

TSA Screening and What to Expect

You clear TSA security in Memphis at the single main checkpoint. A few things regularly catch out travelers heading to India:

Liquids in carry-on follow the 3-1-1 rule — containers of 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less, in a single quart-sized bag. Anything larger goes in checked luggage.

Food gifts are common on India trips. Solid items are generally fine in carry-on, but anything spreadable or pourable — pickles, ghee, chutneys, syrups — counts as a liquid and belongs in a checked bag.

Powders over 12 ounces may trigger additional screening. Spices, protein powders, and supplements are easier checked.

Medication should stay in your carry-on in original labelled packaging, with a copy of the prescription for anything unusual.

TSA PreCheck is available at MEM and helps with the Memphis leg. It does not apply at your international connecting airports.

International Travel Advice

Passport validity. Most airlines will not board you for India unless your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date, with two or more blank pages.

Visa. Nearly all U.S. travelers need a visa or e-Visa for India. Apply well in advance — the airline checks at the Memphis counter, and without one you will not be boarded.
