Indianapolis International Airport (IND) is Indiana's busiest airport and one of the most consistently praised in the country. It set a passenger record in 2025 with 10.6 million travelers, and it has collected an unusual number of customer-satisfaction awards for an airport of its size — including repeated J.D. Power recognition and years of "Best Airport in North America" honours from Airports Council International.

The reason is simple: IND was built to be easy. The Col. H. Weir Cook Terminal opened in 2008 as a $1.1 billion, purpose-built replacement for the old terminal complex, and it was one of the first U.S. airports designed from scratch after September 2001. That meant the architects could plan around modern security rather than bolting it onto a 1960s building.

What you get is one terminal, two concourses, and a layout you can understand in about ten seconds. Everything branches from a bright central atrium called Civic Plaza. There are no trains, no shuttles between concourses, and no chance of ending up in the wrong building. You walk everywhere, and the two furthest gates are only about half a mile apart.

IND is also a big cargo airport — it is FedEx Express's second-largest hub worldwide — and an operating base for Republic Airways and Allegiant.

Indianapolis International Airport (IND) Overview

Airport Location and Layout

IND sits about 12 miles southwest of downtown Indianapolis, reached from I-70 at Exit 68 and then Col. H. Weir Cook Memorial Drive. The drive downtown usually takes 15 to 20 minutes.

Around 11 airlines serve IND with more than 55 nonstop destinations. The main carriers are Delta, Southwest, American, and United, joined by Alaska, Allegiant, Frontier, Spirit, Sun Country, Air Canada, and Aer Lingus, which operates IND's transatlantic service to Dublin.

Understanding the IND Airport Layout

This is one of the simplest layouts of any significant U.S. airport.

One terminal. The Col. H. Weir Cook Terminal is a three-level, LEED-certified building with a light-filled atrium at its centre called Civic Plaza.

Here is how the levels work:

Level 1 — Arrivals, baggage claim (five carousels), the Ground Transportation Center, and rental car counters

Level 2 — Departures, ticketing, Civic Plaza, both security checkpoints, and access to the concourses

Level 3 — airline offices and overflow seating

Two concourses, both branching from Civic Plaza on the upper level:

Concourse A — around 20 gates, extending east

Concourse B — around 19 gates, extending north

Two checkpoints, one per concourse. Unlike most airports, IND has a dedicated checkpoint for each concourse rather than one central hall.

The good news: once you are through either checkpoint, you can walk between Concourse A and Concourse B inside the secure area. There is no re-screening. If your gate changes from A to B after you have cleared security, you simply walk.

The two furthest gates are about half a mile apart, with moving walkways to help.

Civic Plaza is open to everyone. This is a nice touch that most airports do not offer: the shops and restaurants in Civic Plaza, before security, are open to the general public — not just ticketed passengers. If you are meeting someone, you can sit down for a proper meal rather than waiting in a corridor.

How to Navigate IND Efficiently

A checkpoint tip: the two checkpoints do not always run identical lane setups, and TSA PreCheck availability can vary between them. If you have PreCheck, check which checkpoint is running it before you commit. Since both concourses connect after security, you can enter at either one and walk across.

Here is what sits in each part of the airport.

Civic Plaza and the Ticketing Hall

Civic Plaza is the heart of the building — a bright, high-ceilinged atrium just beyond the Ticketing Hall on Level 2, with shops, restaurants, and the Guest Services desk.

The public access point is worth repeating: Civic Plaza retailers serve anyone, ticketed or not. Sit-down options here include the Indiana Pacers Courtside Club and the Indianapolis 500 Grill — both unmistakably local, and both usable by someone dropping off or collecting a passenger.

You will also find the Haflich Meditation Room at the south end of the Ticketing Hall, open to travelers of all faiths.

Concourse A

Concourse A extends east from Civic Plaza with around 20 gates. It is generally the busier of the two and it handles all of IND's international flying, including the Aer Lingus service to Dublin.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is located in the international arrivals area on Level 1.

Concourse A is home to the Delta Sky Club, IND's first passenger lounge — a 4,800 square foot space just past the security checkpoint, with artwork designed to evoke aerial views of Indiana and the Midwest.

Dining here leans heavily local: Harry & Izzy's, HC Tavern + 1933 Lounge from the St. Elmo Steak House group, Social Cantina, and Shapiro's Delicatessen — an Indianapolis institution serving pastrami and matzo ball soup.

Moving walkways run toward the higher-numbered gates. There is a pet relief area near Gate A6 and a nursing room in the concourse.

Concourse B

Concourse B extends north from Civic Plaza with around 19 gates, handling Southwest, American, and several other domestic carriers.

Concourse B has arguably the strongest food line-up at the airport — Sun King Brewing, Bub's Burgers & Ice Cream, Shake Shack, Natalie's Candy Jar, and the Fan Zone Sports Bar.

It also has the EnRoute Spa near Gate B6, a pet relief area near Gate B5, a nursing room, and a children's play area.

Walking Between Concourses

Both concourses connect after security through the base of the terminal. If your gate moves from A to B, or you want a restaurant in the other concourse, you can simply walk. The whole airport is half a mile end to end, with moving walkways along the way.

This is a genuine advantage. At most airports of comparable traffic, a concourse change means a train or a re-screen.

International Airlines at IND

International flights — including the Aer Lingus nonstop to Dublin — use Concourse A, with customs processing on Level 1.

Check your boarding pass, since gate assignments shift. But at IND the stakes are low: if you end up at the wrong concourse after security, it is a short walk rather than a lost flight.

Security and TSA Screening at IND

IND has two security checkpoints on Level 2, one serving each concourse.

Opening times. Checkpoint A opens at roughly 3:30 a.m. and Checkpoint B at about 3:45 a.m., with closing times following the last departures.

TSA PreCheck and CLEAR are both available. Lane configurations can differ between the two checkpoints, and PreCheck is not always running at both, so it is worth checking which one is open for it on the day. Because the concourses connect airside, entering at the other checkpoint costs you nothing but a short walk.

How long to allow. IND's compact design and strong staffing mean waits are typically shorter than at comparable airports, but the standard advice applies: 2 hours before a domestic flight, 3 before an international one.

Peak times. Early mornings are heaviest. Locally, the busiest stretches of the year are Indianapolis 500 weekend in late May, the winter holidays, and major convention weeks — Indianapolis hosts a lot of large events, and they show up at the airport.

Airport Lounges at IND

IND's lounge options are modest but well chosen, and one of them is unusual.

The Fan Zone is the interesting one. Rather than a traditional lounge, IND partners with a sports bar in Concourse B: eligible Priority Pass members get a set credit — currently around $28 — toward their food and drink bill. For many travelers that is a better deal than a lounge buffet, and it means Priority Pass holders on any airline have somewhere to use it.

The Delta Sky Club in Concourse A opened in 2010 and was IND's first lounge. At 4,800 square feet it is compact but comfortable, with complimentary food and drink, workstations, and charging.

Because both concourses connect after security, you can reach either lounge from either concourse.

IND's parking is genuinely inexpensive by national standards, and the four options are easy to compare. The airport also runs a loyalty scheme called parkIND Plus, which earns points toward free parking.

Terminal Garage

The Terminal Garage is connected to the terminal by a temperature-controlled pedestrian bridge — a real benefit in an Indiana January. It has three floors of covered parking plus an open-air fifth level.

Daily parking is $23 a day on all floors. Hourly parking is $2 per half hour, which makes it inexpensive for meeting an arriving passenger — and since Civic Plaza is open to the public, you can wait somewhere pleasant.

Rental car counters are on Level 1 of the garage.

Valet Parking

Valet is on Level 3 of the Terminal Garage at $32 a day. It includes complimentary EV charging, a car wash option, luggage assistance, and call-ahead vehicle retrieval — a fuller service than valet at most airports for the money.

Park & Walk

Park & Walk sits in the Long Term Lot at $14 a day, and it does what the name says: an 8 to 9 minute walk to the terminal, no shuttle. Good if you want to skip the bus and do not mind the stroll.

Economy Lot

The Economy Lot is the budget option at $9 a day, with more than 8,000 spaces. Free shuttle buses run 24 hours a day, every 5 to 7 minutes, from covered shelters.

The airport's own guidance is that the whole process — parking, shuttle, arriving at the Ground Transportation Center — averages about 15 minutes, then a five-minute walk into the terminal. Budget 20 to 25 minutes total.

If your shuttle display shows a wait over 10 minutes, there is a parking supervisor line you can call.

Cell Phone Lot

Free, near I-70 Exit 68. Wait there at no cost until your passenger is ready. Parking is also free at the Airport Service Plaza while waiting.

IND Parking Rates at a Glance

Rates are published by the Indianapolis Airport Authority. Take a ticket on entry and pay by card at a pay station or by cash with a cashier.

Book ahead around the Indy 500 in late May, when the airport and its lots run at capacity.

Free EV charging. Chargers are on Level 3 of the Terminal Garage — 14 spaces on the red side along the atrium plus four in the valet area on the green side — and 20 more on Level 5, including fast chargers for short stays. First come, first served.

Accessible spaces are available in both the Terminal Garage and the Economy Lot.

Rental Car Counters

IND's rental setup is one of the most convenient in the country: the counters and cars are on Level 1 of the Terminal Garage, directly across the pedestrian bridge from the terminal. No off-site facility, no shuttle bus, no waiting outdoors.

Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, Sixt, and Thrifty all operate here.

Rental Car Return

Return to the same garage and walk back across the bridge. Because there is no shuttle involved, you need far less buffer than at most airports — 20 minutes is usually plenty on top of your normal check-in time.

A Winter Note

Indiana winters bring snow and ice. If you are renting between December and March, confirm the car has an ice scraper and consider all-wheel drive if you are heading out of the city.

Ground Transportation

The Ground Transportation Center (GTC) is on Level 1, outside baggage claim. Taxis, rideshares, hotel shuttles, and buses all load here.

Rideshare pickup is at the GTC, Zone 1.

Getting To and From Indianapolis Airport

IndyGo Route 8. Indianapolis's public bus route 8 runs between the airport and downtown for about $1.75, taking roughly 40 minutes. It picks up at Level 1. It is by far the cheapest way into the city, and a future rapid-transit line is planned to serve the airport.

Driving. Downtown is about 12 miles via I-70, typically 15 to 20 minutes.

Taxi. Fares to downtown generally run $35 to $45.

Rideshare. Uber and Lyft pick up at the Ground Transportation Center, Zone 1.

Hotel shuttles. A large number of nearby hotels run courtesy shuttles from Level 1 — useful, since IND does not currently have a hotel inside the airport.

A note on rail: there is no train connection to IND. The bus, a rideshare, or a rental car are your options.

IND has quietly built one of the better airport food scenes for its size, and it has done it deliberately. The airport's Concessions Refresh programme has spent years replacing generic national chains with genuine Indianapolis restaurants, and it shows. There are more than 25 places to eat and drink.

Shopping at Indianapolis Airport

Shops are spread across Civic Plaza and both concourses, with a mix of news and convenience stores, Indiana gifts, motorsport merchandise, travel essentials, and specialty retail.

Again, Civic Plaza shops are open to the public, so you do not need a boarding pass to browse.

Passenger Services and Amenities

The walking loops are a genuinely thoughtful touch — marked routes so you can stretch your legs properly during a long wait rather than pacing a gate area.

The terminal operates 24 hours a day. There is currently no hotel inside the airport, though one is under construction — see What's Changing below.

Accessibility at Indianapolis Airport

IND's design works in favour of travelers with accessibility needs. The terminal is compact, the walking distances are short, and there are no trains or shuttles to navigate between concourses.

Wheelchair assistance. Arrange this with your airline when you book, or ask at the ticket counter on Level 2. Airlines handle wheelchair service from check-in through security to the gate, and from arrival to baggage claim.

Moving walkways run toward the far gates in both concourses, which meaningfully reduces the effort on the longest stretch of the airport.

One building, one level for gates. Because both concourses branch from Civic Plaza on the same level, there are no level changes between security and your gate — an advantage over multi-level airports.

Accessible parking is available in both the Terminal Garage and the Economy Lot. The Terminal Garage is the better choice if walking distance matters, since the temperature-controlled pedestrian bridge takes you straight in with no shuttle.

Valet at $32 a day includes luggage assistance and call-ahead vehicle retrieval, which can be worth the premium if you have mobility needs.

Baggage claim at IND is on Level 1, with five carousels. Follow the signs down from your concourse and check the screens for your carousel number.

Domestic Arrivals

Walk from your gate down to Level 1. Bags come out there, and the Ground Transportation Center — with taxis, rideshares, hotel shuttles, and the rental car counters in the adjoining garage — is right outside.

Because IND has a single terminal, anyone meeting you comes to one building. There is no wrong place to go.

International Arrivals

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is in the international arrivals area on Level 1, serving flights that land at Concourse A.

The process is standard: passport control, collect your bags, clear the customs inspection, then exit into the main arrivals area.

If you are connecting onward, re-check your bags and clear security again. Allow at least three hours for an international-to-domestic connection — though IND's compact layout makes this less painful than at larger airports.

Lost and Found

For items left on the plane, contact your airline directly. For items left at a security checkpoint, file a claim with TSA. Anything else lost in the terminal goes to the airport's Lost and Found — Guest Services in Civic Plaza can point you the right way, or call 317-487-7243.

At IND, getting the wrong concourse is not a crisis. Both branch from Civic Plaza and connect after security, and the two furthest gates are only half a mile apart with moving walkways in between. Very few airports this busy let you do that.

Use Civic Plaza If You Are Meeting Someone

At $9 a day it is one of the cheapest airport lots in the country, with shuttles every 5 to 7 minutes around the clock. A week costs $63 versus $161 in the Terminal Garage. Allow 20 to 25 minutes from parking to the terminal door.

Rental Cars Are Right There

The counters are on Level 1 of the Terminal Garage, across a covered bridge from the terminal. No off-site facility, no shuttle. If you are choosing airports in the region and need a car, this is a real point in IND's favour.

How Early to Arrive

Arrive 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international one. Add 20 minutes if you are parking in the Economy Lot.

Watch the local calendar. Indy 500 weekend in late May is the single busiest stretch of the year, and major conventions can fill the airport unexpectedly. Check before you travel in those windows.

Use the Walking Loops

Marked walking routes run through the Ticketing Hall and both concourses — a quarter-mile landside and half a mile in each concourse. On a long delay, considerably better than sitting.

What's Changing at IND

A 253-room Westin hotel connected to the terminal garage is under construction, expected to open in December 2027. It will be IND's first on-site hotel.

Public transit — a future rapid-transit line is planned to serve the airport, improving on the current Route 8 bus.

Flying from Indianapolis (IND) to India

There are no nonstop flights between Indianapolis and India, so every journey involves at least one connection — and usually two.

How Your Route Will Work

Two stops is the norm from Indianapolis. Most itineraries connect first through a larger U.S. gateway — Chicago, Newark, New York JFK, Atlanta, Detroit, or Washington Dulles — and then through a European or Middle Eastern hub before reaching India. Expect 26 to 34 hours of total travel.

One stop is occasionally possible via IND's Aer Lingus nonstop to Dublin, connecting onward from there. Dublin is a genuinely useful option from Indianapolis — it is the airport's only transatlantic route, and it removes an entire U.S. connection from the journey. Schedules are seasonal, so check availability for your dates.

If you fly this route regularly, it is worth comparing fares out of Chicago O'Hare as well, which is about three hours' drive and has far deeper service to India.

Recommended Arrival Time at IND

Arrive at least 3 hours before your first departure, even if that first leg is a short domestic hop, because you will be checking bags all the way through to India and international check-in takes longer.

IND is efficient and rarely has extreme security queues, so you are unlikely to need more than that — but make it 3.5 hours during Indy 500 weekend, the December holidays, or a major convention week.

Add 20 minutes if you are parking in the Economy Lot.

Most airlines close international check-in 60 minutes before departure. Missing that costs you the whole itinerary, not just one flight.

Baggage Transfer

Book the whole journey on one ticket wherever possible. On a single ticket your bags are normally checked straight through from Indianapolis to your final Indian city — which matters a great deal on a two-stop route, where handling your own bags twice would be exhausting.

Two things to confirm at the IND counter before you walk away:

Look at the bag tag yourself. It should show your final destination — BOM, DEL, MAA, BLR, HYD, and so on — not just your first connecting airport.

Ask whether you need to collect and re-check anywhere. On two-stop routes with an airline change, you often will.

If you booked separate tickets, assume you will collect and re-check at every connection point and clear security again each time. On an Indianapolis-to-India routing that can mean doing it twice. Leave at least four hours per connection.

A Dublin note: if you route via Aer Lingus to Dublin, be aware that Dublin has U.S. preclearance facilities on the return journey — meaning you clear U.S. immigration in Ireland before boarding, and land in Indianapolis as a domestic arrival. That is a real convenience coming home.

Baggage allowance on India routes is often more generous than U.S. domestic rules. The allowance that applies is set by the airline operating your long-haul leg — check that carrier's rules, not the one flying you out of Indianapolis.

TSA Screening and What to Expect

You clear TSA security in Indianapolis before your first flight, at the checkpoint for your concourse. A few things regularly catch out travelers heading to India:

Liquids in carry-on follow the 3-1-1 rule — containers of 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less, in a single quart-sized bag. Anything larger goes in checked luggage.

Food gifts are common on India trips. Solid items are generally fine in carry-on, but anything spreadable or pourable — pickles, ghee, chutneys, syrups — counts as a liquid and belongs in a checked bag.

Powders over 12 ounces may trigger additional screening. Spices, protein powders, and supplements are easier checked.

Medication should stay in your carry-on in original labelled packaging, with a copy of the prescription for anything unusual.

TSA PreCheck and CLEAR are available at IND and help with the Indianapolis leg. Neither applies at your international connecting airports.

International Travel Advice

Passport validity. Most airlines will not board you for India unless your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date, with two or more blank pages.

Visa. Nearly all U.S. travelers need a visa or e-Visa for India. Apply well in advance — the airline checks at the Indianapolis counter, and without one you will not be boarded.

OCI cardholders should carry both the OCI card and the passport it is linked to.

Layover length matters more on a two-stop route. Aim for 2.5 to 3 hours minimum at each international connecting hub. With two connections, one early delay can unravel everything downstream — so build the slack into your first leg out of Indianapolis rather than relying on tight turns later.

Winter weather. Indiana gets snow and ice from December through March, and a cancelled first leg out of IND takes the rest of the itinerary with it. If you are travelling in winter, book a first flight with a comfortable connection window at your U.S. hub, and consider travel insurance covering weather disruption.

Summer storms. Midwest thunderstorms are common in summer afternoons. A morning departure from Indianapolis is more reliable than an afternoon one.
