RDU is clean, efficient, and generally a pleasure to use. It has won repeated awards for service quality in its size category. But it has one structural quirk that shapes everything, and it is the first thing to understand.

RDU is two completely separate terminals — Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 — with no connection behind security.

They sit on opposite sides of a central parking complex. If you clear security in Terminal 1 and then need Terminal 2, you cannot walk there airside. You exit, cross via a shuttle or a covered walkway, and clear a second checkpoint. For connecting passengers whose two flights are in different terminals, that adds 30 to 45 minutes.

Understanding the RDU Airport Layout

RDU splits its airlines between two terminals — broadly, low-cost carriers in Terminal 1 and full-service carriers in Terminal 2 — and the two do not connect once you are inside security.

How you cross between terminals:

But — and this is the key point — both options are landside. There is no airside connection. Crossing terminals after security means exiting, moving across, and re-clearing TSA. Budget 30 to 45 minutes if you have to do it.

Within Terminal 2, once you are through the single checkpoint, you can walk freely between Concourses C and D.

How to Navigate RDU Efficiently

Confirm your terminal from your boarding pass. Terminal 1 or Terminal 2.

RDU Terminal and Concourse Map Guide

Here is what sits in each part of the airport.

Terminal 1 — Concourse A

Terminal 1 is the smaller, simpler building, used by RDU's low-cost and lower-frequency carriers. It has nine gates on a single concourse, A1 to A9, with shorter walks and generally lighter crowds.

Facilities split across two levels: ticketing, baggage claim, and ground transportation on the ground level; security and the departures concourse upstairs. A tunnel from the ground level leads to the parking garage and through to Terminal 2.

Terminal 1 has a smaller but perfectly good selection of shops and quick-service dining. There is a Starbucks near Gate A3 that regular travelers rate as less crowded than the ones in Terminal 2.

Terminal 2 — Concourses C and D

Terminal 2 is the main building, handling most of RDU's passengers and all international arrivals. Its architecture is well regarded — a soaring, light-filled hall by the same design lineage as several landmark modern terminals.

After the single central security checkpoint, the concourse splits:

Concourse C (south) — gates C1 to C25. Gates C21, C23, C24, and C25 handle international arrivals.

Concourse D (north) — gates D1 to D20.

The heart of Terminal 2 is The Shoppes at RDU, a central shopping and dining hub between the concourses. This is where most of the airport's food, retail, and lounges cluster.

Moving walkways run in the connector corridors between the main hall and the concourses.

Crossing Between Terminals

Both the shuttle bus and the covered walkway through the parking decks are landside only. If your itinerary has one flight in each terminal — for example, a low-cost carrier connecting to a full-service one — you will exit security, cross over, and re-screen. Allow 30 to 45 minutes.

Security and TSA Screening at RDU

Each terminal has its own security, and they are entirely separate.

Terminal 1 has its own checkpoint on the upper level, feeding Concourse A.

Terminal 2 has a single centralized checkpoint feeding both Concourses C and D. This is the busier one, and its layout has a known quirk: the ticketing hall in front of it is shallow, so when the line grows it spreads sideways across the hall toward the airline counters rather than forming a long back-and-forth queue.

TSA PreCheck and CLEAR are both available. Frequent RDU travelers single out the CLEAR lanes in Terminal 2 as a real time-saver during the morning rush.

RDU Fast Track. The airport offers a reservation-style program to help you book a spot in the standard security line — worth checking on rdu.com if you are travelling at a busy hour without PreCheck.

How long to allow. Standard advice applies: 2 hours before a domestic flight, 3 before an international one. The morning bank is the heaviest, and the Terminal 2 checkpoint is the pinch point.

The construction factor: the Transform RDU program means the Terminal 2 environment is changing. A floor-to-ceiling wall encloses the construction zone, but all ticket counters and security lanes remain fully operational. Follow current signage.

Airport Lounges at RDU

RDU's lounges are all in Terminal 2, which matters if you are flying a low-cost carrier from Terminal 1.

The catch: all three lounges are in Terminal 2 only. If you are flying Southwest, Alaska, Avelo, Breeze, Spirit, or Sun Country from Terminal 1, none of them is reachable without leaving, crossing to Terminal 2, and clearing security there — which almost never makes sense.

There is no Priority Pass lounge, Centurion Lounge, or Capital One Lounge at RDU.

Within Terminal 2, because Concourses C and D connect after the single checkpoint, you can reach any lounge from either concourse.

RDU's parking is run by ParkRDU, with five on-airport options plus a cell phone lot. The system is cashless — all facilities take major credit and debit cards only, though you can convert cash to a prepaid card at ReadySTATION kiosks in both terminals.

ParkRDU Premier

Premier is the closest and most convenient: exclusive first-level covered parking near the terminals, with easy in-and-out access that avoids looping around the complex.

Rate: $5 per hour, $25 a day.

ParkRDU Central

Central is the main garage — over 10,000 spaces, covered and uncovered, a short walk from the terminals. This is the workhorse lot for most travelers.

Drive-up rate: $5.70 per hour up to four hours, then a $22.75 daily maximum. (Hourly listings show roughly $3 per hour on some tiers; confirm at booking.)

ParkRDU Express

Express sits a little further out at a lower rate, with shuttle service to the terminals.

Rate: from $1 per hour, a budget middle option.

ParkRDU Economy 3 and Economy 4

The Economy lots are the cheapest on-airport option — park-and-ride lots on the north and south sides of the airport campus with free shuttle buses running about every 10 minutes.

Economy 3 drive-up rate: $3.65 per hour up to four hours, then a $14.50 daily maximum. Economy 4: around $11 a day, opened as overflow when the closer lots fill.

For trips of a few days or more, the Economy lots are the clear on-airport value. A week in Economy runs roughly $100 or less, versus $160-plus in the Central garage.

Valet

RDU does not operate its own airport valet. Several nearby off-site lots and hotels offer valet service if you want it.

Cell Phone Lot

Free, near the rental car area. Wait there — attended — until your passenger is ready for pickup.

Book at least 24 hours ahead. ParkRDU uses a contactless, pre-booked system, and the closer lots genuinely fill — RDU has had days where the decks and Economy 3 hit 100% capacity, forcing it to reopen Economy 4. Reserve online at rdu.com to guarantee a space.

Free EV charging locations are available, including covered wall outlets on parking level 4-U — an extension cord is recommended, since the outlet covers can block larger connectors. Charging is available at the ParkRDU Central and Premier facilities; normal parking rates apply.

Rental Car Facility

RDU's rental car offices are located southwest of the terminals, alongside the cell phone waiting lot, served by shuttle. Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Sixt, and Thrifty all operate here.

Follow the rental car signs from baggage claim at your terminal.

Rental Car Return

Return to the same facility southwest of the terminals and take the shuttle back to your terminal — remembering which one your airline uses. Allow around 30 minutes on top of your normal check-in time.

A Note on Cars in the Triangle

The Research Triangle is spread out — Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and Research Triangle Park each sit some distance apart, and there is no rail transit connecting them or the airport. If your trip involves moving around the region — visiting SAS, Apple's new campus, Duke, UNC, or NC State — a rental car is genuinely the practical choice.

Ground Transportation

Ground transportation is on the lower level outside each terminal: taxis, rideshare pickup zones, hotel shuttles, regional buses, and parking shuttles. Curbside zones are clearly signed by mode.

Getting To and From Raleigh-Durham Airport

GoTriangle Route 100. The regional bus route 100 connects RDU with Raleigh and the wider Triangle. It is the main public-transport option and inexpensive, though it runs on a fixed schedule and is not always practical with luggage or a tight timeline.

Driving. Raleigh and Durham are each about 13 miles and 20 minutes via I-40. Chapel Hill is roughly 17 miles. Research Triangle Park is minutes away.

Taxi and rideshare. Both pick up on the lower level. Uber and Lyft are widely available across the region.

Hotel shuttles. Many airport-area and Research Triangle Park hotels run courtesy shuttles from the lower level.

A note on rail: there is no rail link to RDU, and the Triangle has no light rail or subway. A long-discussed regional transit plan has not produced rail service to the airport. For most visitors, a rental car or rideshare is the realistic option.

Terminal 2 — The Shoppes at RDU

The central marketplace between Concourses C and D is where most of the good food is, clustered around the Gates C3 to C9 area. Highlights include:

Terminal 1 — Concourse A

Terminal 1 has a smaller selection of quick-service spots and coffee. The Starbucks near Gate A3 is a good bet and usually less crowded than its Terminal 2 counterparts.

The terminal rule applies to food too. Because the two terminals do not connect airside, you cannot cross to the other one for a better meal. Within Terminal 2, though, Concourses C and D connect, so you can walk to the central hub from either.

Plan around your terminal. If you are flying a low-cost carrier from Terminal 1 and want more choice, eat before you go through security, or accept the smaller Concourse A selection.

Shopping at Raleigh-Durham Airport

Terminal 2's central hub has the strongest retail, including Brighton Collectibles, Brooks Brothers, Tech on the Go, and a TripAdvisor store, alongside news and convenience shops. Terminal 1 has a smaller selection near the gates.

RDU also has a notable art collection throughout both terminals, showcasing the region's heritage of fine arts and crafts.

Passenger Services and Amenities

Accessibility at Raleigh-Durham Airport

Wheelchair assistance. Arrange this with your airline when you book, or ask at the ticket counter. Airlines provide service from check-in through security to the gate, and from arrival to baggage claim.

Accessible parking is marked in every ParkRDU lot near the terminal entrances, elevators, and walkways, at standard rates. A vehicle with disabled plates or a permit is required.

The inter-terminal shuttle is accessible, which matters here — if you need to cross between terminals and the covered walkway through the parking decks is too far, the shuttle is the better choice. Both are landside.

The terminal split is worth planning around. Because you cannot move between terminals after security, a wrong-terminal mistake means a shuttle ride and a second screening — a real burden for anyone with mobility needs. Confirm your terminal carefully before you set out, and if you have a connection with flights in different terminals, allow generous time.

Moving walkways in both terminals reduce the walking effort to the gates.

Baggage claim at RDU is on the lower (ground) level of each terminal. Terminal 1 bags come out in Terminal 1; Terminal 2 bags in Terminal 2. There is no crossover.

Domestic Arrivals

Follow the signs from your gate down to the ground level of your terminal. Screens show your carousel. Ground transportation, rental car shuttles, taxis, and rideshare pickup are all outside on the same level.

Tell anyone meeting you which terminal you are arriving at. The two are on opposite sides of the parking complex, and going to the wrong one means a shuttle ride or a walk through the decks.

International Arrivals

Terminal 2 handles all international arrivals. You clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection there — gates C21 and C23 to C25 are the international arrivals area — collect your bags, and continue out to the ground level.

Flights from preclearance airports arrive as domestic flights.

If you are connecting onward, re-check your bags and clear security again — and if your onward flight is in Terminal 1, you will also cross terminals landside. Allow at least three hours for an international connection, and more if a terminal change is involved.

Lost and Found

For items left on the plane, contact your airline directly. For items left at a security checkpoint, file a claim with TSA. Anything else lost in the terminal goes to the airport's Lost and Found through rdu.com. Report it as soon as you notice.

How Early to Arrive

Arrive 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international one. Add 20 minutes if you are using an Economy lot shuttle, and expect the Terminal 2 morning bank to be the busiest stretch.

Plan for a Car in the Triangle

Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and RTP are spread out with no rail between them or to the airport. Unless someone is collecting you, budget for a rental or rideshare.

Flying from Raleigh-Durham (RDU) to India

There are no nonstop flights between Raleigh-Durham and India, so every journey involves at least one connection — and usually two.

How Your Route Will Work

Two stops is common from RDU. Most itineraries connect first through a larger U.S. gateway — Newark, New York JFK, Chicago, Atlanta, Washington Dulles, or Toronto — then onward through a European or Middle Eastern hub before reaching India. Expect 26 to 34 hours of total travel.

One stop is increasingly possible. RDU has grown its transatlantic service, with nonstops to London, Paris, Frankfurt, and Reykjavik at various points. Connecting onward from London or Frankfurt can remove a U.S. leg entirely. Iceland's Icelandair routing via Reykjavik is another option worth pricing. Schedules are seasonal, so confirm for your dates.

Total journey time from Raleigh-Durham typically runs 20 to 32 hours depending on routing and layovers.

Recommended Arrival Time at RDU

Arrive at least 3 hours before your first departure, even if that first leg is a short domestic hop, because you will be checking bags all the way through to India and international check-in takes longer.

Confirm your terminal. Your international carrier will almost certainly be in Terminal 2, but if your itinerary begins with a low-cost domestic leg from Terminal 1, be aware of the terminal split. Arriving at the wrong one on an international travel day is a costly mistake.

Add 20 minutes if you are parking in an Economy lot, and make it 3.5 hours during the winter holidays or a peak summer weekend.

Most airlines close international check-in 60 minutes before departure. Missing that window costs you the entire itinerary.

Baggage Transfer

Book the whole journey on one ticket wherever possible. On a single ticket your bags are normally checked straight through from Raleigh to your final Indian city — which matters a great deal on a two-stop route.

Two things to confirm at the RDU counter before you walk away:

Look at the bag tag yourself. It should show your final destination — BOM, DEL, MAA, BLR, HYD, and so on — not just your first connecting airport.

Ask whether you need to collect and re-check anywhere. On two-stop routes with an airline change, you often will.

If you booked separate tickets, assume you will collect and re-check at every connection point and clear security again each time. On a Raleigh-to-India routing that can mean doing it twice — and if a domestic leg puts you in the wrong RDU terminal, factor the cross-terminal move in as well. Leave at least four hours per connection.

Baggage allowance on India routes is often more generous than U.S. domestic rules. The allowance that applies is set by the airline operating your long-haul leg — check that carrier's rules, not the one flying you out of Raleigh.

TSA Screening and What to Expect

You clear TSA security in Raleigh at the checkpoint for your terminal. A few things regularly catch out travelers heading to India:

Liquids in carry-on follow the 3-1-1 rule — containers of 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less, in a single quart-sized bag. Anything larger goes in checked luggage.

Food gifts are common on India trips. Solid items are generally fine in carry-on, but anything spreadable or pourable — pickles, ghee, chutneys, syrups — counts as a liquid and belongs in a checked bag.

Powders over 12 ounces may trigger additional screening. Spices, protein powders, and supplements are easier checked.

Medication should stay in your carry-on in original labelled packaging, with a copy of the prescription for anything unusual.

TSA PreCheck and CLEAR are available at RDU and help with the Raleigh leg. Neither applies at your international connecting airports.

International Travel Advice

Passport validity. Most airlines will not board you for India unless your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date, with two or more blank pages.

Visa. Nearly all U.S. travelers need a visa or e-Visa for India. Apply well in advance — the airline checks at the Raleigh counter, and without one you will not be boarded.
