Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is one of the busiest airports in the world and American Airlines' second-largest hub after Dallas/Fort Worth. It handled 53.6 million passengers in 2025, running around 1,424 flights a day to 179 nonstop destinations.

Those numbers usually mean a sprawling, complicated airport. Charlotte is the opposite, and that is what makes it worth knowing.

CLT is a single terminal with five concourses, and every one of them is walkable. No trains, no shuttles, no underground people mover. Even the farthest gate is normally about 15 minutes on foot from the middle of the building. For an airport moving more than 50 million people a year, that is genuinely unusual — and if you connect through Charlotte often, it is the reason your tight connections tend to work out.

The other thing to know: roughly two-thirds of the people here are connecting, not starting or ending their trip. American operates close to 90% of flights. So CLT runs in waves — long quiet stretches followed by an enormous bank of arrivals and departures all at once.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) Overview

Airport Location and Layout

CLT sits about 8 miles west of Uptown Charlotte, off Josh Birmingham Parkway near Wilkinson Boulevard and I-85. It is close enough that a rideshare into the city usually takes around 20 minutes.

American Airlines dominates CLT, operating close to 90% of all flights. Other carriers with service here include Delta, United, Southwest, Spirit, Frontier, Sun Country, Air Canada, Viva Aerobus, and Volaris. International nonstops from Charlotte reach London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Paris, and a range of Caribbean and Latin American destinations, mostly on American.

Understanding the CLT Airport Layout

Charlotte's design is simple to picture: one long building running east to west, with five concourses branching off it and a large open Atrium in the middle acting as the crossroads.

Here is how the levels work:

Upper level — airline ticket counters, curbside drop-off, and all three security checkpoints

Lower level — baggage claim, ground transportation, taxis, rideshare, the CATS bus stop, and parking shuttles

Mezzanine above the Atrium — the USO Lounge, the chapel, and connections through to the concourses

Past security, everything links together. The Atrium is the central hub, and a walkway runs along the middle of the terminal connecting all five concourses. You never need to clear security twice to move between them.

There is also a D/E Connector — a secure walkway between those two concourses. It is genuinely useful, because it lets you bypass the Atrium entirely when the crowds build there.

The one thing to plan around: Concourse E is the farthest from the core. Connections to or from E take real time, especially during a peak arrival bank when the corridors fill up. If your connection involves E, walk first and browse later.

How to Navigate CLT Efficiently

Here is the simple way to read the CLT gate map and move fast:

Note your concourse letter and gate from your boarding pass. "Gate D9" means Concourse D, Gate 9.

Head to the upper level for check-in and bag drop.

Clear security at Checkpoint 1, 2, or 3 — they all lead to the same secure area.

Walk to your concourse. Everything connects.

If you are heading to or from Concourse E during a busy bank, use the D/E Connector rather than fighting through the Atrium.

A route tip most travelers miss: the corridor between Concourses B and C narrows near the checkpoint wall, and it becomes a genuine bottleneck when a bank lands. Routing a little deeper into the Atrium adds a few steps but usually saves time.

CLT Terminal and Concourse Map Guide

Here is what sits in each part of the airport.

The Central Terminal and Atrium

The Central Terminal holds all check-in, security, baggage claim, and ground transportation. It was substantially rebuilt by the $608 million Terminal Lobby Expansion, which finished in September 2025 — the biggest single change to the passenger experience at CLT in decades.

The expansion widened the ticketing hall, consolidated the security checkpoints, and added a large new public space. It also brought in Meridian, a suspended sculpture by artist Danielle Roney in the western part of the lobby, made up of 569 spheres and 467 LED lights.

At the centre sits the Atrium, CLT's living room. It is where the concourses meet, where much of the dining sits, and where you will find the airport's most famous feature — see the rocking chairs below.

Above the Atrium, on the mezzanine, are the USO Lounge and the airport chapel.

Concourse A

Concourse A is the first concourse off the main walkway and the one that handles most of CLT's non-American traffic. Delta, United, Southwest, Frontier, Sun Country, Air Canada, Viva Aerobus, and Volaris operate here, alongside some American flights.

Concourse A was expanded in recent years and has a good spread of dining and shops. The Club CLT, a pay-in lounge, sits between gates A21 and A22.

Concourse B

Concourse B is American territory and sits close to the Atrium, which makes it one of the easier concourses for a quick connection.

An Admirals Club is located here on Level 2.

Concourse C

Concourse C is also almost entirely American. It sits between B and D along the main spine.

Be aware that the stretch between B and C is where congestion tends to build during peak banks — it is the tightest part of the walking route.

Concourse D

Concourse D is American, and it handles a good share of the airline's longer-haul and premium flying. A second Admirals Club is here.

Concourse D is being renovated through late 2026, with work covering restrooms, electrical systems, and flooring. Expect some areas to be walled off while that continues.

Concourse E

Concourse E is the farthest concourse from the terminal core and handles a large volume of American's regional flying along with other services.

It has its own security checkpoint (Checkpoint 3) and its own dining. Concourse E is scheduled for renovation work running into 2027.

If your connection involves Concourse E, treat the walking time seriously. It is the one part of CLT where a tight connection can genuinely go wrong.

The D/E Connector

The D/E Connector is a secure walkway between Concourses D and E, and it is the smartest piece of routing knowledge at this airport. It lets you move between the two without going back through the Atrium, which matters enormously when a bank has just landed.

The connector also holds several amenities, including Minute Suites and, on the mezzanine between D and E, the American Express Centurion Lounge.

Charlotte Airport Airlines by Concourse

Because American runs almost the entire airport, the concourse layout is less about which airline you are on and more about which gate you have been assigned. Always go by your boarding pass.

International arrivals are processed through the airport's customs facility in the D and E area. If you are flying internationally, confirm your gate with American or your boarding pass, since assignments move.

Security and TSA Screening at CLT

Charlotte's security was reorganised as part of the terminal expansion, and the old setup no longer applies.

Three checkpoints, not five. The airport consolidated its five old checkpoints into three:

Checkpoint 1 — replaces the former A and B checkpoints

Checkpoint 2 — replaces the former C and D checkpoints

Checkpoint 3 — replaces the former E checkpoint

All three lead into the same secure area, so you can use any of them and walk to any concourse. In practice, though, pick the one nearest your gate — CLT is walkable, but it is also long, and an unnecessary cross-terminal walk costs you 10 minutes.

Automated screening lanes were installed as part of the rebuild, increasing throughput per lane by roughly 20 to 30% over the old standard lanes.

One caveat during construction: because the checkpoints were consolidated and the lobby reconfigured, entry points no longer map neatly to one checkpoint per concourse the way they used to. If you flew from CLT a few years ago, do not rely on muscle memory. Check the signs.

Peak times. CLT runs in banks rather than a steady flow, so the checkpoint can be nearly empty one moment and heaving 20 minutes later. Early mornings are consistently busy. TSA PreCheck is available and makes a real difference here.

Airport Lounges at CLT

Charlotte has around eight lounges, which is generous for an airport where most travelers are simply passing through.

The USO Lounge is worth flagging for military families — it has a children's play zone with a TV and movie lounge, a games console, and a small library.

Because every concourse connects after security, you can reach any lounge in the airport from any gate. Just factor in the walk if you are coming from Concourse E.

CLT has around 25,000 parking spaces across seven on-airport facilities, and rates changed on March 1, 2026. The spread between the cheapest and most expensive is wide, so it pays to choose deliberately.

Hourly Deck

The Hourly Deck sits directly in front of the terminal — the shortest walk of any self-park option, connected by pedestrian bridges and an underground walkway. It caps at $35 a day.

That makes it expensive for an overnight stay but ideal for pickups and short visits. It also houses the Rental Car Facility on Level 2.

Daily Deck

The Daily Deck is covered and close to the terminal at $28 a day — the sensible pick for a one- or two-night trip when you want a short walk without the Hourly Deck price.

Express Deck

The Express Deck costs $24 a day, sitting between the close-in decks and the budget lots on both price and distance.

Daily North

Daily North costs $18 a day with free shuttle service to the terminal.

Long Term Lots 1 and 2

The Long Term Lots are the budget choice at $14 a day, with free shuttles running to the terminal. For any trip beyond about three days, this is where the savings are.

A week in Long Term costs $98. The same week in the Hourly Deck costs $245.

Valet

Valet parking is the premium option at $50 a day. Attendants take your car curbside on the Departures level, and you walk straight into the terminal. It is the only facility with no free grace period.

Cell Phone Lot

Free, on Josh Birmingham Parkway near Long Term Lot 1. Wait there until your passenger is at the curb. Stay with your vehicle.

CLT Parking Rates at a Glance

Rates are set by the City of Charlotte Aviation Department and took effect March 1, 2026.

Two things worth knowing:

The first 15 minutes are free in every on-airport facility except Valet. That covers a quick drop-off or pickup at no charge.

About 16,000 of the 25,000 spaces can be reserved online at parkCLT.com or through the CLT Airport app. Pre-booking is strongly recommended around holidays, when the close-in decks fill.

EV charging is available in the Hourly Deck and in the valet area. If you use valet, ask the attendant to plug your car in at drop-off.

Charlotte Airport Car Rental Map

Rental Car Facility

CLT's rental car counters are unusually convenient. Rather than sitting in a separate building across the airfield, they are on Level 2 of the Hourly Deck, directly in front of the terminal.

Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Sixt, and Thrifty all operate here. You walk across from the terminal rather than waiting for a shuttle — a real time saver compared with most large airports.

Rental Car Return

Return your car at the same facility in the Hourly Deck and walk back across to the terminal. You still want a buffer, but far less than at airports with off-site rental centres.

Ground Transportation

Everything loads from the lower level (Arrivals and Baggage Claim):

Taxis — curbside, with an attendant on duty from 6:45 a.m. to 12:15 a.m.

Rideshare — designated Uber and Lyft pickup zones outside the terminal

Parking shuttles — on the inner lanes outside baggage claim

CATS buses — outside the Zone D doors

Getting To and From Charlotte Airport

CATS Sprinter, Route 5. This is the public transport option at CLT. The Sprinter runs between the airport and the Charlotte Transportation Center in Uptown, taking 25 to 35 minutes depending on traffic, at a fare of around $2.20.

Buses run roughly every 20 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes on nights and weekends, and service is reduced between midnight and 4 a.m. Look for buses marked "Sprinter to Airport."

Important detail: there is only one bus stop at the airport, on the baggage claim level outside the Zone D doors. Arriving Sprinter passengers are dropped at the same spot. From Uptown, the Sprinter connects easily to other CATS routes including the LYNX Blue Line light rail.

Driving. Uptown is about 8 miles, typically 15 to 20 minutes.

Taxi and rideshare. Both pick up on the lower level. A rideshare to Uptown typically runs around $22 and takes about 20 minutes.

A note on rail: there is currently no train or light rail directly to CLT. The planned Silver Line would improve regional connectivity, but its airport-area station would still require a further transit connection. For now, the Sprinter bus is the transit option.

Charlotte Airport Food Map

CLT has more than 60 restaurants and bars, and the identity here is unmistakably Southern — barbecue, biscuits, fried chicken, and local Carolina names alongside the national chains.

Where to Eat by Area

The Atrium is the heart of the food scene, with the widest selection in one place. If you have a connection with an hour to spare and no strong preference on gate, this is where to head.

Concourse A has a solid range serving the non-American carriers and the newer gate areas.

Concourses B, C and D each have their own clusters of restaurants and bars, with D getting refreshed options as its renovation progresses.

Concourse E has its own dining, which matters because it is far enough out that walking back to the Atrium for a meal is not always practical.

The Rocking Chairs

This is the CLT tradition, and it deserves its own mention. White rocking chairs are scattered throughout the Atrium and the concourses, free to use on a first-come basis. They have been part of the airport for decades and are the single most-loved thing about the place.

If you have a long connection, grab a plate from the Atrium, find a rocking chair, and watch the world go by. Very few airports give you a genuinely pleasant way to kill an hour.

The connection advantage: because every concourse links after security, you can eat anywhere in the airport regardless of your gate. Only Concourse E is far enough out that the walk needs thinking about.

Shopping at Charlotte Airport

Shops are spread across the Atrium and all five concourses. You will find news and convenience stores, Carolina-themed gift shops, travel essentials, electronics, and specialty retail.

The Atrium and the D/E Connector have the strongest concentration, with the connector holding several well-known names. Duty-free shopping is available for international departures.

Passenger Services and Amenities

A practical note: CLT is compact enough that walking between amenities is realistic in a way it is not at Denver or Dallas. If something you want is two concourses away, you can usually get there.

Accessibility at Charlotte Airport

All CLT facilities — restrooms, lifts, ground transportation, and concourses — meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

Wheelchair assistance. Request this from your airline when you book, or ask at the ticket counter on the day. Airlines handle wheelchair service from check-in through security to the gate, and from arrival to baggage claim.

Golf carts in the connector. This is a Charlotte-specific benefit worth knowing about. Golf carts operate along the central connector walkway for passengers with mobility needs or very tight connections. At an airport where Concourse E is a long walk from the core, this can make the difference between making and missing a flight. Ask a staff member if you need one.

Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program. CLT participates in the Sunflower programme, which supports travelers with non-visible disabilities such as autism, anxiety, PTSD, and hearing loss. Wearing a sunflower lanyard quietly signals to staff that you may need more time or assistance.

Accessible ground transportation. The complimentary parking shuttles are accessible and run continuously from the inner lanes outside baggage claim — call 704.359.4038 if you need assistance. All CATS buses meet ADA requirements. For an accessible taxi, speak to the curbside attendant, on duty from 6:45 a.m. to 12:15 a.m.

Accessible parking is available in all on-airport decks and lots at standard rates.

Baggage claim at CLT is on the lower level of the Central Terminal, below the ticketing hall. Follow the signs down from your concourse and check the screens for your carousel.

Domestic Arrivals

Walk from your gate through the concourse to the terminal, then down to the lower level. Carousels are lettered by zone, and ground transportation — taxis, rideshare, parking shuttles, and the CATS Sprinter at Zone D — is right outside.

Because CLT has one terminal, anyone meeting you comes to a single building. There is no wrong terminal to end up at.

International Arrivals

International flights are processed through U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the airport's international arrivals facility. You clear passport control, collect your bags, pass the customs inspection, then continue out to the lower level.

If you are connecting onward — which most people at CLT are — you re-check your bags after customs and clear security again. Allow at least three hours between an international arrival and a domestic departure.

Lost and Found

For items left on the plane, contact your airline directly. For items left at a security checkpoint, file a claim with TSA. Anything else lost in the airport goes to CLT's Lost and Found through cltairport.com. Report it as soon as you notice.

Everything Is Walkable — But It Is Still Long

CLT needs no trains or shuttles, which is a real advantage. But "walkable" is not the same as "short." The terminal stretches a long way east to west, and Concourse E sits at the far end. Look at your gate letter before you decide to browse the shops.

Use the D/E Connector

When a bank of flights lands, the Atrium fills up fast and the corridor between B and C narrows into a bottleneck. The D/E Connector lets you skip the worst of it. Learning this one route makes Charlotte connections noticeably less stressful.

How Early to Arrive

Arrive 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international one. Add 30 minutes if you are parking in a Long Term Lot and taking the shuttle.

Because CLT runs in banks, security wait times swing wildly. Do not judge by a friend's experience last Tuesday.

Save Real Money on Parking

Long Term at $14 a day against the Hourly Deck at $35 is a $147 difference over a week. Unless you are only there for a few hours, take the shuttle. And remember the first 15 minutes are free everywhere except valet — useful for drop-offs.

Grab a Rocking Chair

Not a logistics tip, just a good one. The white rocking chairs in the Atrium are free, comfortable, and the best seat in the airport. If you have an hour, use it properly.

Rental Cars Are Right There

Unlike most big hubs, CLT's rental counters are on Level 2 of the Hourly Deck, directly across from the terminal. No off-site shuttle. If you are choosing between airports in the Carolinas and a car is part of the plan, this is a point in Charlotte's favour.

Flying from Charlotte (CLT) to India

There are no nonstop flights between Charlotte and India, so every trip involves at least one connection. The good news is that CLT's transatlantic service makes the one-stop routing genuinely practical.

How Your Route Will Work

One stop. Fly nonstop from Charlotte to London Heathrow, Frankfurt, or Paris, then onward to India on a partner airline. This is the fastest option and the one most Charlotte travelers use.

Two stops. Connect first through another U.S. gateway — Dallas/Fort Worth, New York JFK, Chicago, or Newark — then onward internationally. Often cheaper, but expect 26 to 32 hours of total travel.

Total journey time from Charlotte typically runs 20 to 30 hours depending on routing and layover length.

Recommended Arrival Time at CLT

Arrive at least 3 hours before your first departure, even if that first leg is domestic, because you will be checking bags all the way through to India and international check-in takes longer.

During holiday periods, spring break, or a heavy connecting bank, allow 3.5 hours. Add 30 minutes if you are parking in a Long Term Lot.

Most airlines close international check-in 60 minutes before departure. Missing that window costs you the whole itinerary.

Baggage Transfer

Book the entire journey on one ticket wherever possible. On a single ticket your bags are normally checked straight through from Charlotte to your final city in India.

Two things to confirm at the CLT counter before you walk away:

Look at the bag tag yourself. It should show your final destination — BOM, DEL, MAA, BLR, HYD, and so on — not just your first connecting airport.

Ask whether you need to collect and re-check anywhere. Some routings, particularly those switching airlines or alliances, require it.

If you booked separate tickets, assume you will collect your bags at the connecting airport, re-check them, and clear security again. Allow at least four hours for that.

A Charlotte-specific point: because CLT is overwhelmingly an American Airlines hub, most one-stop India itineraries from here run on American and its oneworld partners — British Airways, Qatar Airways, and others. Staying within one alliance usually makes through-checked baggage smoother than mixing carriers.

Baggage allowance on India routes is often more generous than U.S. domestic rules, and the allowance that applies is set by the airline operating your long-haul leg. Check that carrier's rules, not the one flying you out of Charlotte.

TSA Screening and What to Expect

You clear TSA security in Charlotte before your first flight. CLT's rebuilt checkpoints use automated screening lanes, which move faster than the old setup. A few things still catch out travelers heading to India:

Liquids in carry-on follow the 3-1-1 rule — containers of 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less, in a single quart-sized bag. Anything larger goes in checked luggage.

Food gifts are common on India trips. Solid items are generally fine in carry-on, but anything spreadable or pourable — pickles, ghee, chutneys, syrups — counts as a liquid and belongs in a checked bag.

Powders over 12 ounces may trigger extra screening. Spices, protein powders, and supplements are easier checked.

Medication should stay in your carry-on in original labelled packaging, with a copy of the prescription for anything unusual.

TSA PreCheck helps with the Charlotte leg but does not apply at your international connecting airport.

International Travel Advice

Passport validity. Most airlines will not board you for India unless your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date, with two or more blank pages.

Visa. Nearly all U.S. travelers need a visa or e-Visa for India. Apply well in advance — the airline checks at the Charlotte counter, and without one you will not be boarded.

OCI cardholders should carry both the OCI card and the passport it is linked to.

Layover length. Aim for 2.5 to 3 hours minimum at your international connecting hub. London Heathrow in particular often involves a terminal change, and 90 minutes there is not enough if your Charlotte departure slips.

Watch the summer thunderstorm season. Charlotte gets afternoon storms through the summer months, and because CLT operates in tight banks, a ground delay ripples quickly. If you are travelling June through August, an earlier departure from Charlotte with a longer international layover is safer than a tight afternoon connection.

Arrival in India. Have your visa, your address in India, and your return ticket details ready for immigration.
