Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) is one of the busiest airports in the world. In 2025 it handled about 84.8 million passengers — up 6% from the year before — making it the sixth-busiest airport on the planet by passenger count. By flight activity it is busier still: with roughly 857,000 takeoffs and landings, O'Hare reclaimed the title of world's busiest airport by aircraft operations in 2025, averaging a flight every 37 seconds. It is a dual hub for United Airlines and American Airlines and sits about 17 miles (27 km) northwest of downtown Chicago.

O'Hare has four terminals — 1, 2, 3, and 5 (there is no Terminal 4) — and a free 24/7 airport train. The road system is shaped like a hexagon, and the layout feels overwhelming on a first visit. A clear map fixes that: it lets you find your gate, switch terminals, park, and reach the city without stress. This guide walks you through every part of the airport in plain steps — whether you're catching a quick domestic hop or a long-haul flight to India.

O'Hare Airport Map Overview

The full ORD map looks busy, but the logic is simple. Terminals 1, 2, and 3 sit side by side along the lower edge of the hexagon; Terminal 5 sits a short distance east. The single most important thing to remember:

  • Terminals 1, 2, and 3 are connected after security. You can walk between them airside without being re-screened. These are the main domestic terminals.

  • Terminal 5 is the international terminal and is not connected by walkway. To reach it you take the free ATS train (and clear security again).

Domestic vs. international: Most US flights leave from Terminals 1, 2, and 3. Most flights to and from other countries use Terminal 5 — though a few international flights also operate from Terminals 1 and 3, so always check your boarding pass.

Why there's no Terminal 4: the number was planned in early designs but never built, so don't waste time looking for it.

O'Hare Terminal 1 Map

Terminal 1 is United's main base at O'Hare and runs more flights than any other airline at the airport. Star Alliance partners such as Lufthansa and ANA also use it when flying with United.

Concourses B and C hold around 50 gates, joined by O'Hare's most photographed feature — an underground tunnel lit with colorful neon and soft music. Concourse B handles most mainline flights; Concourse C handles larger international aircraft.

Lounges: The United Polaris Lounge is in Concourse C (near Gate C18) — United's top international-business lounge and one of the best in the country, with full dining, shower suites, and day beds. Three United Club lounges are also in Terminal 1.

Dining: Coffee bars, sit-down spots, and grab-and-go counters across both concourses, including a branch of Rick Bayless's Tortas Frontera (also found in Terminals 3 and 5).

O'Hare Terminal 2 Map

Terminal 2 is the calmest, most low-key terminal — a smart choice for a relaxed start.

Airlines: Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, JetBlue, and many regional United Express flights. (When Delta moved out to Terminal 5 in 2022, its old E-concourse gates were reallocated to United and Alaska.)

Gates: Concourses E and F, about 41 gates between them, easily reachable after security; you can also walk over to Terminals 1 and 3 without leaving the secure zone.

Good to know: The CTA Blue Line station (into downtown) and the main parking garage are right by Terminal 2 on the lower level. Terminal 2 also has a children's play area.

Dining: Smaller than the others, but the local craft favorite Goose Island Beer Co. is a solid sit-down stop.

O'Hare 21 note: Terminal 2 will eventually be demolished and replaced by a new O'Hare Global Terminal that handles domestic and international flights under one roof — part of the $8.5 billion O'Hare 21 program (more below). Expect signage, gates, and walkways to shift during construction.

O'Hare Terminal 3 Map

Terminal 3 is the largest terminal at O'Hare and American Airlines' big base, with hundreds of flights a day.

Gates: Four concourses — G, H, K, and L — with about 80 gates, the biggest set at ORD, so give yourself extra time to find your gate.

Other airlines: Besides American, Terminal 3 handles international carriers such as Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, and Japan Airlines, plus regional flights. Spirit has long used Terminal 3, but its schedule has changed — confirm your gate on your boarding pass.

Lounges: The American Admirals Club (Concourses G and L) and the premium Flagship Lounge (near the H/K gates) are both here.

Amenities & dining: Terminal 3 has one of the strongest food line-ups at O'Hare, anchored by the much-loved Tortas Frontera, and it holds the airport's yoga room in the rotunda mezzanine. Some spots close early evening, so eat before a late flight.

O'Hare Terminal 5 Map (International Terminal)

Terminal 5 is O'Hare's international terminal — if you're flying to or from another country, this is most likely where you'll be.

Airlines: Most foreign carriers, plus Delta (which moved here in 2022), Frontier, Southwest, and Sun Country. It has one concourse, Concourse M, with about 35 gates (numbered non-sequentially up to M40), including three gates that can handle the Airbus A380.

International arrivals: You land here from abroad, then clear immigration, collect bags, and pass Customs. The lower level holds arrivals, baggage claim, and the ATS station.

Lounges: The 22,600-sq-ft Delta Sky Club (Concourse M, ~400 seats), plus the Swissport Lounge (near M15) and Air France Lounge, both of which accept Priority Pass, and the LOT and SAS business lounges.

⚠️ Important: You cannot walk between Terminal 5 and Terminals 1, 2, or 3. Take the free ATS train (or, if you remain airside, the Terminal Transfer Bus). Plan extra time when connecting.

CTA Blue Line: The cheap, simple way downtown — about 40–45 minutes to the Loop for a $5 airport fare (standard CTA rides are cheaper; O'Hare carries a surcharge). The station sits on the lower level near Terminal 2 and runs 24 hours, which makes it reliable for very early or late flights. Pay with the Ventra app or a contactless card.

Rental cars: All companies are at the Multi-Modal Facility — take the free ATS train.

Reaching ORD from around Chicago: The Kennedy Expressway (I-90) runs directly into the airport from downtown. Metra's North Central Service also stops at O'Hare for some suburban connections. For pickups, drivers can wait free at the cell-phone lot until you have your bags rather than circling.

WiFi, Security & Expedited Screening at O'Hare

Free WiFi is available throughout O'Hare — connect to the airport network and open your browser.

O'Hare has about 10 security checkpoints; waits average roughly 15 minutes but can reach 40 at peak. TSA PreCheck lanes are at checkpoints 2 and 3 in Terminal 1, checkpoint 5 in Terminal 2, and checkpoints 7A and 8 in Terminal 3. Global Entry kiosks are in Terminal 5 for international arrivals. Plan to arrive at least 90 minutes before a domestic flight and 2–3 hours before an international one; Terminal 5 lines tend to run longer because of document checks.

O'Hare Arrivals & Departures Guide

  • International arrivals land at Terminal 5, where you clear immigration, claim bags, and pass Customs before exiting (or re-checking for a connection).

  • Domestic arrivals land at Terminals 1, 2, or 3 — follow the signs to baggage claim on the lower level.

  • Baggage claim is on the lower (arrivals) level of each terminal; check the screens for your carousel.

  • Passenger pickup is on the lower-level outer curb. Drivers can wait at the free cell-phone lot until you're ready.

O'Hare Food Map & Dining Guide

O'Hare's food is better than its reputation, with several Chicago names among the chains.

Terminal 1 (United): coffee bars, sit-down spots, and grab-and-go across Concourses B and C, including Rick Bayless's Tortas Frontera.

Terminal 2: smaller, but Goose Island Beer Co. is a reliable craft-beer-and-a-meal stop.

Terminal 3 (American): one of the strongest line-ups at O'Hare, anchored by Tortas Frontera, with many sit-down and fast options across the concourses.

Terminal 5 (international): coffee, casual dining, and grab-and-go (Chick-fil-A, McDonald's, Six Points Market and more). Options thin out late at night, so eat early before an evening departure.

Hotels at O'Hare

The Hilton Chicago O'Hare Airport is the on-airport hotel, connected to Terminals 1, 2, and 3 by an underground pedestrian walkway — ideal for very early departures, long layovers, or red-eye arrivals from India. Numerous off-airport hotels near the Multi-Modal Facility and along Mannheim Road run free shuttles and are cheaper for longer stays.

Family & Accessibility Facilities

O'Hare has children's play areas (including in Terminal 2), nursing rooms, and a yoga room in Terminal 3's rotunda mezzanine. The ATS train is accessible with level boarding and space for wheelchairs and mobility aids, and wheelchair assistance can be arranged through your airline. The airport also rotates art and cultural exhibits throughout the terminals.

Flying From O'Hare (ORD) to India

Because many Myflyyatra travelers fly between Chicago and India, here is the part most general O'Hare guides skip.

Departing ORD to India. Most India-bound long-haul flights leave from the International Terminal (Terminal 5), though some carriers connect through European, Gulf, or Asian hubs from other terminals — always check your boarding pass. Arrive at least 3 hours early for an international departure.

Most of these cities are reached with one stop in a hub such as Delhi, Dubai, Frankfurt, London, or Doha.

Arriving from India and connecting to a US domestic flight — the step-by-step. This is where tight layovers go wrong, so plan for it:

  1. Deplane at Terminal 5 and follow signs to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

  2. Clear immigration. Use Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or Mobile Passport lanes if eligible; the standard line is slower. The CDA says the full CBP process rarely takes more than two hours.

  3. Collect ALL your checked bags — even if they're tagged through to your final destination.

  4. Clear Customs (CBP baggage/agriculture inspection).

  5. Re-check your bags. American, Delta, and United passengers recheck at the counters right after Customs; passengers on other airlines go to that airline's ticket counter.

  6. Take the free ATS train to your departure terminal (1, 2, or 3) and clear TSA security again. (The airside Terminal Transfer Bus is only for passengers who are already past security — not for international arrivals who had to exit through Customs.)

How much connection time to leave. The published minimum at O'Hare for an international-to-domestic connection is about 90 minutes (e.g., on American), but that's tight for anyone with checked bags, without expedited screening, or arriving in the busy late-afternoon international bank. For a connection after a flight from India, target 2.5–3 hours. If you're on a single ticket and miss a connection through no fault of your own, your airline must rebook you at no extra cost.

Precleared shortcut: if you connect through a preclearance airport (such as in Canada or Ireland) you'll already have cleared U.S. Customs and can use the airside Terminal Transfer Bus without re-screening — but direct flights from India are not precleared, so the full process above applies.

O'Hare Airport Tips for First-Time Travelers

  • Arrive early. At least 90 minutes before a domestic flight and 2–3 hours before an international flight.

  • Use airside walkways for domestic connections between Terminals 1, 2, and 3 — no re-screening. Save the ATS for landside trips and Terminal 5.

  • Build in extra time for Terminal 5. It's a separate building reached only by train, and its lines run longer.

  • Pick a quieter checkpoint. Terminal 2's security is usually calmer; PreCheck and (where offered) expedited lanes speed things up.

  • Mind the O'Hare 21 construction. Signs, gates, and walkways can change — check your airline app on the day you fly.
