Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is the main international gateway for Washington, D.C. It is the airport most people use for long flights to Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. It is also United Airlines' big East Coast hub.

Dulles is busy. In 2025, about 29 million travelers passed through. Around 46 airlines fly here to more than 160 cities around the world. That is a lot of people moving through one airport, so a little planning goes a long way.

Looking at the Dulles airport map before you arrive is one of the smartest things you can do. IAD is spread out. The gates are not inside the main building. They sit in separate buildings out in the middle of the airfield, and you ride a train to reach them. Once you know your route, it is simple. If you do not know it, you can waste 20 minutes walking the wrong way.

Dulles has one Main Terminal and five airside concourses: A, B, C, D, and Z. A brand-new Concourse E opens in fall 2026. Most gates are reached by the underground AeroTrain.

Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) Overview

Airport Location and Layout

Dulles sits about 26 miles west of downtown Washington, D.C. It is in Loudoun and Fairfax counties, Virginia. You reach it by the Dulles Access Road, which is only for airport traffic, or the Dulles Toll Road (VA-267). Both connect to I-66 and the Capital Beltway (I-495).

More than 50 airlines serve Dulles. But over 70% of passengers fly United Airlines or United Express. Other big names here include American, Delta, Southwest, Frontier, Air Canada, British Airways, Lufthansa, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Air France, KLM, Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, and Air India.

Understanding the IAD Airport Layout

The IAD airport layout is different from most U.S. airports. Here is the simple version.

Main Terminal. This is the famous curved building designed by Eero Saarinen. It sits outside the secure area. It has two levels. Departures and check-in are upstairs. Arrivals, baggage claim, and ground transportation are downstairs. There are four ticketing areas upstairs, and four matching drop-off curbs outside. Which one you use depends on your airline. Security and passport control are also in this building.

Concourse Z. This small concourse is attached right to the Main Terminal. It has just five gates. United and Air Canada use it. You walk there — no train needed.

Concourse A/B. One long building out in the middle of the airfield. Concourse A handles most foreign airlines plus United Express regional flights. Concourse B handles a mix of U.S. and international airlines.

Concourse C/D. A second long building, further out. United and United Express use both C and D for domestic and international flights.

Concourse E (new). A 435,000-square-foot building with 14 gates, opening in fall 2026. United is the only airline that will use it.

How you get to the gates. The underground AeroTrain runs from the Main Terminal to Concourses A, B, and C. You can also walk a pedestrian tunnel to A, B, and Z. Concourse D has no train stop. You either walk from C or take a mobile lounge.

How to Navigate IAD Efficiently

Here is the simple way to read a map of IAD and move fast:

Find your airline and note its concourse letter (A, B, C, D, or Z).

Use the matching ticketing area and drop-off curb on the upper level.

Check in and drop your bags on the departures level.

Clear security in the Main Terminal.

Follow the "AeroTrain to Gates" signs down to the train. If you are going to A, B, or Z, you can also walk.

Your gate number is on your boarding pass and on the screens around the terminal. It is also in your airline's app, which updates faster than the signs. If your gate is in Concourse D, leave extra time. There is no train stop there, and the walk from C is long.

IAD Terminal and Concourse Map Guide

The IAD terminal map is easy once you split it into the Main Terminal and the concourses. Here is a quick look at each one.

Main Terminal Map and Facilities

The Main Terminal is where every trip starts and ends. Check-in, bag drop, and security are upstairs. Baggage claim, rental car counters, and ground transportation are downstairs. Passport and immigration control is here too, close to Concourse C. You will also find shops, restaurants, information desks, and the walkway to the Metro station.

Concourse A Map and Facilities

Concourse A is the main home for foreign international airlines. It has two gate levels. Gates A1A to A6A sit at the end of the concourse on the lower level and handle smaller regional planes. Gates A14 to A32 are on the upper level, near the pedestrian walkway from the terminal.

You will find shops and restaurants on both levels. Concourse A also has the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse, the Air France-KLM Lounge, and the Etihad Lounge. If you have a long layover, Sleepbox nap pods here can be booked by the half hour through the Sleepbox app.

Concourse B Map and Facilities

Concourse B has 28 gates. They are numbered B37 to B38, B40 to B45, B47 to B51, B62 to B67, B70 to B76, and B78 to B79. American, Delta, Southwest, Frontier, Condor, and several other airlines use this concourse.

Concourse B is a good place to eat. It also holds the British Airways lounge near the AeroTrain station, the Lufthansa Business Lounge across from gates B49 and B51, and the Turkish Airlines Lounge next to gate B43.

Concourse C and D Map and Facilities

Concourses C and D make up the outer building, and they belong to United. Concourse C has the AeroTrain station, most of the food, and the biggest cluster of lounges. You will find United Clubs near gates C4, C7, and C17, plus the United Polaris Lounge near gate C18.

Concourse D sits past C. It has no train stop of its own. You walk from C or take a mobile lounge. Food and seating are thinner out here, so eat in C first.

Concourse Z Map and Facilities

Concourse Z is the small concourse attached to the Main Terminal. It has five gates and you reach it on foot. That makes it the fastest gate area at Dulles. United and Air Canada use it.

Concourse E (Opening Fall 2026)

Concourse E is the first new concourse at Dulles in more than 20 years. It cost around $700 million and adds 14 new gates, each with its own jet bridge. It has direct AeroTrain access, so getting there will be easy.

It also brings more than 46,000 square feet of new shops and restaurants, including a food court and at least 17 new businesses. Upstairs there will be a 40,000-square-foot United Club with seating for about 650 people — one of the largest United Clubs in North America.

United is the only airline that will fly from Concourse E, using it for both domestic and international flights. The target opening is late September or early October 2026. Big airport projects can shift, so check before you fly.

Concourse Connections and Transfers

You stay inside the secure area when you move between concourses, so there is no second security check. Ride the AeroTrain for A, B, and C. Walk the pedestrian tunnel for A, B, and Z. For D, walk from C or take a mobile lounge.

Most foreign airlines use Concourse A or Concourse B. That includes Air France, KLM, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Etihad, Virgin Atlantic, Air India, Ethiopian Airlines, British Airways, and Turkish Airlines.

The IAD parking map makes it simple to pick the right lot. Dulles has five on-airport options: Valet, the Terminal Lot, Garage 1, Garage 2, and the Economy Lot. Together they hold about 21,500 cars.

Parking Garages

Garage 1 connects to the terminal through an underground walkway with moving sidewalks. That same tunnel leads to the Silver Line Metro station. Garage 2 uses a covered walkway and sits closest to Concourse A, which makes it the better pick for international flights.

Both garages cost $7 per hour with a $21 daily cap. Garage 1 has 96 EV charging stations. Garage 2 has 66.

Terminal Lot

The Terminal Lot is the closest self-park option. It sits right across from the Main Terminal and connects by an underground walkway, so you do not need a shuttle. It costs $7 per hour with a $32 daily cap.

Economy Parking

The Economy Lot is the cheapest on-airport choice at a flat $15 per day. A free shuttle runs 24 hours a day and picks up at Curb 2F in the Main Terminal. Look for buses marked "ECONOMY."

With 11,431 spaces, it is the largest lot at Dulles. It is also uncovered, so give yourself a few extra minutes to find your car when you get back. You can reserve a spot in advance at reserve.flydulles.com.

Valet Parking

Valet is the easiest option. You drive to the Main Terminal entrance, hand over your keys, and walk straight to check-in. It costs $10 per hour with a $39 daily cap.

Dulles Parking Rates at a Glance

Rates are set by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) and were current in spring 2026. Book ahead during summer, Thanksgiving, and the winter holidays, when lots fill fast. Rates change, so check before you travel.

Rental Car Locations

Rental brands at Dulles include Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, and Thrifty. Counters are on the arrivals level of the Main Terminal. A free shuttle takes you from the curb to the rental car facility where you pick up your car.

Rental Car Return

Return your car at the rental car facility off Autopilot Drive. Then ride the same free shuttle back to the Main Terminal departures level. Road signs guide you in from the Dulles Access Road. Allow 15 to 20 minutes between drop-off and check-in.

Ground Transportation

The lower arrivals level of the Main Terminal is the ground transportation area. This is where you find taxis, rideshare pickups, hotel shuttles, and buses. Follow the signs down from baggage claim.

Getting To and From Washington Dulles

Silver Line Metro. The Metro now runs right to the airport. The station opened in November 2022, ending 60 years with no train link. It connects to the terminal by the same underground walkway that serves Garage 1. The ride to Metro Center takes about 60 minutes and costs around $6.75 at peak times. It is the cheapest way into the city.

Driving. Allow 45 to 75 minutes to downtown D.C. on the Dulles Access Road and I-66, depending on traffic.

Taxi. Washington Flyer runs the taxi service at Dulles. Pick-up is on the arrivals level.

Uber and Lyft. Rideshare pick-up is also on the arrivals level. Follow the signs to the marked zone.

Bus. Fairfax Connector routes 952 and 983 serve the airport. Route 952 goes to Herndon, Reston Town Center, and Wiehle–Reston East. Route 983 goes to the Innovation Center and the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. Megabus also runs from Dulles to cities like Charlottesville and Blacksburg.

There is plenty to eat at IAD, both before and after security. Here is what the Dulles food map looks like.

Dining in the Main Terminal

The Main Terminal has coffee shops, grab-and-go counters, and sit-down spots on both levels. You will also find news stands and gift shops, Duty Free Americas, and The Kitchen by Wolfgang Puck.

Dining in Concourse A and B

Concourse A has shops and restaurants on both gate levels. Concourse B has more choice, with names like &pizza, Chick-fil-A, and Five Guys. If you want a full meal before a long flight, Concourse B is your best bet on that side of the airport.

Dining in Concourse C and D

Concourse C has the widest range on the United side. You will find fast casual counters, bars, and coffee near the AeroTrain station. Concourse D is much thinner, so eat in C before you make the walk out.

Dining in Concourse E

Concourse E will open with a food court and at least 17 new places to eat and shop, including a Starbucks.

Tip: eat before security only if you have time to spare. Once you ride the AeroTrain out to your concourse, you cannot come back to the Main Terminal without going through security again.

When you land, the IAD baggage claim map helps you find your bags fast. Baggage claim is on the lower arrivals level of the Main Terminal. Follow the overhead signs and check the screens for your carousel number. Baggage carts are available in the claim area.

Domestic Arrivals

For domestic flights, ride the AeroTrain from your concourse back to the Main Terminal. Then head down to the arrivals level for baggage claim.

International Arrivals

Passport and immigration control is in the Main Terminal, close to Concourse C. When you land, you are taken from your gate to the immigration hall. You clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection, pick up your bags, and exit on the arrivals level.

Some international arrivals still use mobile lounges for this transfer. It works, but it adds time. If you have a connecting flight, give yourself at least three hours.

Lost and Found

If you left something on the plane, contact your airline. If you left it at a security checkpoint, file a claim with TSA. Anything lost elsewhere in the terminal goes to the airport's Lost and Found. Report it as soon as you can.

One thing to know: Dulles does not offer luggage storage. There is nowhere to leave a bag between flights.

Arriving at IAD During Peak Times

Security lines at Dulles are longest from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. on weekdays, and again in the late afternoon. Summer, spring break, Thanksgiving, and the December holidays are the busiest weeks of the year. Evening international departures also pack Concourses A and B. Plan for extra waiting during these times.

How Early to Arrive

Arrive at least 2 hours before a domestic flight. For international flights, give yourself 3 hours. Check-in and bag drop desks usually close 45 to 60 minutes before departure. Add extra time if you are parking in the Economy Lot or flying out of Concourse D.

Fastest Routes Between Concourses

Concourse Z is a short walk from the Main Terminal. Concourses A and B are quickest by AeroTrain, but you can walk the tunnel too. Concourse C is one stop past A/B on the train. Concourse D means a long walk from C or a mobile lounge, so budget 20 to 25 minutes if your connection lands there.

A Driving Tip Most Visitors Miss

The Dulles Access Road is only for airport traffic. Do not exit early or you risk a ticket. If you are not going to the airport, use the Dulles Toll Road that runs alongside it.

What's Changing at Dulles in 2026

Concourse E opens this fall, and it is only the start. MWAA's board has approved a long-term plan for three tiers of concourses at Dulles. The goal is to eventually tear down the C/D concourse, which was built as a temporary building more than 40 years ago and is still in use.

That means gate numbers, signs, and walking routes will keep changing over the next few years. Check your concourse before every trip.
